REVIEW                                             MARLEY: a carnage novel by LESLEY JONES

Title: Marley: a carnage novel

Author: Lesley Jones

Series: Carnage Series #3

Release Date: 28th October 2015

Genre: Contemporary Romance

From the author of Carnage 1 & 2, comes this follow-up novel. Marley tells the story of Carnage from Marley Layton’s POV. It will give you the missing years. Marley is a companion novel to Carnage 1 & 2 and both of those books should be read first.

Want to know what really happened in that hotel room in Paris?

Want to know if the rumours of Marley, Sean and their sexploits were true?

We got to watch Georgia fall apart but what was Sean going through in those four years they were separated?

Marley will give you the answers but he might just break your heart along the way.

“‘So, they want me to write a book? They want to know about my band, my life, my loves and my losses. But they have no idea what they’re asking for. If I give them what they want, they’ll get so much more than the sex and drugs and the rock and roll they’re expecting. They’ll get the secrets that I’ve kept for so long, they’ll get an insight into the person I really am, or at least was. They think they know my story, they know nothing.

If I do this, if I write honestly and give them the ugly truth, people will get hurt. People that I love, people that have already suffered in the worst possible ways.

Do I do this, or do I walk away? Taking my secrets to the grave.”

Marley is an adult contemporary romance. It contains content suitable only for grownups with an open mind. There are scenes of group sex which include m/f/m a little bit of f/m/m and even some f/f/f/m/m/f/f/f. There is drinking and drug taking involved. A lot of swearing, some Essex slang and some very high emotion. Please don’t complain after reading this book that you weren’t warned.

And yes, of course you’ll need tissues.

I always knew reading Marley was going to be an emotional roller-coaster. Let’s face it, anybody reading this would certainly have read Carnage books one and two. And we all know what happened in them.

This tells the story from Marley Layton’s point of view. Where the rock band Carnage began, what happened in the four years his sister, Georgia, and band mate and childhood friend, Sean McCarthy, were apart. Marley is torn about whether to write a book about his life as a rock and roll star and all that entailed in that lifestyle. He is torn because of all the guilt, the secrets opening up old wounds. Ashley, Marley’s wife, wants him to open up share what will be in the book; however, he is reluctant and unsure as to whether his wife and kids should know all the things that he did back then.

Quote:  Ash ~ “Talk to me, Marls. Please, don’t shut me out.”
Marley ~ “It hurts, Ash. It still fucking hurts so much.”

We step back in time as Marley tells us how it all started on the first Carnage tour when he found himself and Maca in a predicament in Paris 1985. Two young lads of eighteen in a band, the girls, drugs and alcohol on offer is a recipe for disaster. Only Maca is supposed to be in love with Marley’s little sixteen year old sister, Georgia. Marley gets it in his drug fuelled mind with the help of others that if they were to marry, the band may no longer continue. So he does a selfish act that he will forever feel guilty about.

Len Layton, Marley’s elder brother and manager, despairs of Marley and Maca’s behaviour through the band’s glory years. The boys constant drug taking, drinking and sleeping with anything that moves in a skirt and in fact, not averse to sharing their women.

The story continues with Marley observing Maca missing Georgia and what seemed to be his self-destruction. It sometimes seemed as if he was accepting that he and George were not getting back together then other times, pining for her. What we see is Marley eventually realising that for all the money and what came with the band’s success meant nothing as he felt so lonely. Eventually Maca and George are back together and things seem to be going well except he just couldn’t shake the feeling that he needed more. What I did realise was through all the goofing around, Marley was finally growing up.

Marley meets Ashley who is a friend and employee of Georgia’s. She completely knocks him sideways and it is definitely love at first sight.

Quote: Marley ~ “Happy Birthday, Ashley. You. Are. Beautiful.”
Ash ~ You’re Marley Layton.”
Marley ~ “I am.”
Ash ~ “You said I was beautiful.”
Marley ~ “I did.”
Ash ~ “I’m not stupid. That sort of talk won’t get you in my knickers.”

The banter was funny between Marley and Ashley and I loved their interactions and the connection between the two of them. It was fantastic to read about the Layton family again, but all the while I was waiting for the tragic events that changed the Layton family forever. Reading Marley’s point of view of what happened and subsequently after, broke my heart all over again. Lesley Jones can write hot scenes, funny scenes and by god, she really knows how to throw in angst enough to smash your heart to smithereens! I spent best part of my afternoon in tears, and unable to function up to the point that when my husband arrived home, he was concerned to see me so upset.

Of course, there’s a marvellous play-list to accompany this fantastic five star read which is worth listening to it while reading Marley. I would also advise reading in the comfort of your own home with a box of tissues. If you want to know whether Marley wrote and published his book or not, well, as I’m not going to tell you, you’ll just have to read it! What I will say in Lesley’s defence is this. Maybe after having read Carnage, you’re concerned that you’ll be reading the same story once more. Absolutely no worries here because although it kind of is, the viewpoint is completely different. Worth the tears and upset? Don’t doubt it for a second!

Title: My Life as I Knew It

Author: Brenda Thornlow

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Published: June 23rd, 2014

What would you do if you were sent back in time for some unknown reason? When Brianna wakes up this morning she will be faced with that very question. Brianna lives in New York with her husband, the love of her life, Greg. She’s happily married, has a great job, travels around the world and this year will be celebrating her birthday in style. Until the morning she wakes up in an apartment 3,000 miles from where she and Greg live, and seventeen years in the past! Returning to a life she hoped she would never have to think about ever again, much less relive!

I started writing at a very young age, mostly as an escape from the real world. It is something I have done on and off throughout my life, but never went so far as to actually try and get published.

I started my latest story, My Life As I Knew It, around 3 years ago. I was on a roll with it until I allowed life to get in the way. I am now officially picking up where I left off. It is the first book of a series on which I’m working.

I came up with the premise for this story while undergoing some pretty harsh challenges in my personal life. As mentioned before, I always liked writing as a means of escape. While going through these particularly tough times, I had a moment when I thought about what it would be like to go back in time and do certain things differently…which I’m sure almost everyone has thought about from time to time. I sat in front of my keyboard one morning, thought about what I would do if I had that chance and went from there.

If I were dead, I wouldn’t be able to see.
If I were dead, I wouldn’t be able to feel.
If I were dead, he’d never raise his hand to me again.
If I were dead, his words wouldn’t cut as deep as they do.
If I were dead, I’d be beautiful and I wouldn’t be so…ugly.
I’m not dead…but I wish I was.

The first sentence of the prologue worried me. However, I was encouraged to read on by my morbid curiosity. Anxious to turn the pages, I found myself picking the book up, putting it down, thinking about it while getting on with other things. I lost sleep and even fell into a slumber with book in hand only to wake up startled. This has to be one of the most difficult and disturbing reads for me yet, so therefore I feel it necessary to warn you that the Lily Anderson’s story is one of child abuse. Strong language and vividly described scenes which literally horrified me, are rife.

One thing is the harsh storyline and another is the author’s writing style which I really liked. Told in first person and present, the linearly fashion used gives the book a continuity. Some parts are Lily’s flashbacks though and this extension of the plot gives the book even more strength if that were ever possible. I loved how her sentences were clipped and precise. I loved how she developed Lily’s character from a six year old to a woman in her midtwenties. I hated what she had to go through to become a person in her own right. Despite so much despair and so little hope, I had every faith in the author’s storytelling abilities. And she didn’t disappoint.

Lily’s father is nothing less than an ogre. It is hard to image what he put her through, how cruel and to what extremes he would go to, to make his daughter suffer. His constant insults and repression form his daughter’s personality which in turn, makes her believe that she is ugly and worthless. She has no friends and no wish for them either. All she wants is to disappear off the face of the earth. Not being noticed means no explanations are called for. Intelligent, she does well at school, but she has never had anyone to value her worth. The reverse.

Quote: Lily’s father ~ “Don’t look at her, she’s a retard. She deserves everything she gets.”

Lily jumps out of the frying pan and into an inferno when she meets a lad who has had his eye on her. Sly, he weaves his way into her life with dishonest intentions. She can’t see further than her nose as this is the first time in her life that someone has lavished her with compliments. She believes in him regardless of the change in his behaviour simply because she doesn’t know any better.

Quote: Trent ~ “Just get on your knees and I’ll do the rest.”

Therefore there are two sides to every story where abuse is concerned; the abused and the abuser. Trent rose my hackles from the very beginning of his relationship with Lily. He quickly susses out all her weaknesses and takes advantage for his own warped benefits. I asked myself where he had learnt to orchestrate such evil and the answer is quite simple. A classic case of like father, like son. Trent inherited all his father’s traits and not one of them was positive.

Quote: Lily ~ “Sometimes it’s better to stay with the devil you know, instead of risking it all on the devil you don’t. Isn’t it?”

It takes a friend Lily makes as a teenager for her to realise that she’s not ugly and far from stupid. Bubbly, generous of spirit and sensible, Shayne was for me, a godsend. Whether or not Lily will take all Shayne’s advice you will only find out by reading this book, but I can assure you that she’ll do her utmost to help her. Another friend that has Lily’s back is Max. Despite having a speech impairment, she understands him perfectly. Indefinitely kind, patient and loving, I couldn’t help but fall for him. As the story unravelled, I also discovered he’d had his demons to cope with. An angel. That’s the only way I can describe him.

“Quote: Max ~ “You’re my snowflake. I’d do anything for you.”

To conclude this full length standalone novel, the secondary characters’ personalities are really well-developed. I adored Lily’s bosses, Shayne’s boyfriend, Liam, although I can’t say thing about Trent’s father, or his father’s brother who disgusted me. When the story reaches one of its most critical points and a hard hand is dealt, I cheered out loud. Another important detail for me was the banter. It is plentiful, disturbing most of the time, beautiful in others. To say the epilogue was made in heaven for Lily and Max would be putting it mildly. I am really looking forward to reading more of your works Ms McHeyser. Bravo!

Last word. Have heaps of man-sized handkerchieves at hand. You’ll need them!

I don’t do ‘normal’.

I’ve found that the more I write, the more I like being different to other authors. I write in first person, and I love to challenge a reader.
I take the normal and switch it around.
For me, I really enjoy getting a reaction from a reader. So if I can evoke an emotion (regardless of if it’s the emotion the reader wants) then I figure that I’ve done my job as an author I want to be.
I really quite revel in taking people out of their comfort zones and pushing them to read something different.
My genre of writing is, well quite frankly, where ever my mind goes. I won’t label myself because I don’t like sticking to one genre.
My goal with writing is just to take people away from whatever is going on in their lives, even if it’s only for a split second.
I’m a go with the flow sort of person and don’t really take a course of action to get where I am going. I live in the moment and don’t usually worry about tomorrow because whatever life is due to bring me, I’ll be happy to accept.
I love my family and friends and will help anyway I can if someone needs it. I really don’t like people that are nasty just because they can be, I don’t believe that’s necessary, I mean life’s hard enough as it is!
I hope you enjoy my books, I’ve had a hoot writing them. There’s more to come…..
Til next time.

Miller “Buck” Butterson has been banging his way through life ever since a puck to the face fixed his messed up front teeth, and he was drafted into the NHL during his first year of college. After five years of deflecting goals on the ice and scoring them with puck bunnies across the Continental US and parts of Canada, Miller is ready for a girlfriend. A real girlfriend of the non-bunny variety. One he takes on dates and doesn’t jump into bed with after five seconds of conversation.

Miller thinks he’s found that woman in his teammate’s sister. Except, unlike Alex Waters, center, team captain and all round nice guy—who happens to be dating his step-sister—Miller’s manwhore reputation is well earned, and not blown out of proportion by the media. Beyond that minor detail, Miller doesn’t know the first thing about having a girlfriend. But he’s determined to make it happen.

What he doesn’t take into account is the amount of time and effort relationships require, or that constantly letting bunnies take selfies with him to post all over social media isn’t going to win him any points in the boyfriend department. Miller learns—not so quickly—that if he wants to make Sunshine “Sunny” Waters fall for him, he going to have to do a whole lot more than show her his stick skills in the bedroom.

After reading and absolutely loving Violet and Alex in Pucked, I was thrilled when Pucked up arrived on my Kindle.

This is Violet’s stepbrother, Miller ‘Buck’ Butterson and Alex’s sister, Sunny’s story. After reading Pucked and the way Vi portrayed Buck to be, I expected him to be this guy who he really wasn’t. Confusing, eh? Well, yes and no, but if you read Pucked book one first, this’ll help put everything into perspective. Buck is really sweet deep down, who after falling for Sunny, wants to try to reassure her that he isn’t that person the press and social media make him out to be. Gossip is rife; her listening to the opinions of others could put a spanner in the works.  In other words, he wants her to believe and trust in him.

This story showed Buck’s more emotional side. How his Dyslexia affected his life and just what he was doing to help those less fortunate. This book didn’t have the same laugh out loud moments that Pucked had; nevertheless, it did make me chuckle with the more unfortunate comical situations that Buck found himself in. Some of the things he said and what went through his mind, made me crack up. The two following quotes were without a doubt, my favourites.

Buck: “Pfft. Waters couldn’t break my dick off if he tried. It’s made of straight magic, like a unicorn horn. Except not sharp. And made of flesh instead of whatever mythical substance unicorn horns are made of. But it’s unbreakable.”

Buck thinking out aloud: “Being the provider of the first big “O” gives me some power. It elevates my status. I’m the White Knight in the land of Orgasmia, wielding my magical sword of awesome.”

I was so frustrated with Sunny though. How she spent more time listening and believing everyone else rather than listening to what Buck had to say and not having faith in him, made me want to pull my hair out! But when these two were together…wow! Hot, hot, hot stuff!

But like I said, on the flip side, these two were so cute when they finally get things sorted out.

Buck: “You tired, sweets? You wanna go to sleep?”
Sunny: “No. I want you to love me.”
Buck: “You’re not tired of being loved yet?”

I loved the glimpses we got of Violet, Alex and the other characters we first met in Pucked. Violet is still as funny and entertaining as ever in the things she says and does! Overall, this follow up is an excellent compliment to the first book with a happily ever after. The storyline flows impeccably, the editing, faultless. So looking forward to reading book three and seeing who’s story is next.

He’ll do anything to protect her. Even if it means letting her go.

Tate Jackson made a big mistake. No, a monumental one. He picked the wrong place to introduce his wife, Cassie, to the alluring lifestyle they’d fantasized about.

Instinct told him to get her out of the poor excuse for a sex club—but he didn’t. And she was assaulted because of his carelessness. He’ll do anything to protect her from another traumatic experience, even if it means making the agonizing choice to convince his wife he no longer loves her. Cassie’s not buying it. In fact, Tate is the last person she blames for that horrific night.

She’s willing to give him the space he thinks he needs to get his head straight, but when divorce papers arrive, she realizes she’s out of time. She has twenty-eight days to figure out why Tate is ruining a perfect marriage. Twenty-eight days to figure out what he’s hiding. But when she learns the truth, she has to decide if her heart can take the strain of piecing their love back together.

Warning: Dirty tactics,
dirtier sex, ropes, masks, guilty consciences, and love stretched so far, no
one escapes unchanged. Not even you, dear reader.

Tracey Lou has awarded this read FIVE SINFUL stars.

A welcome return to the the Vault. The club down under where all things go bump in the night! How I have missed this oh so naughty club. This is the second instalment of the Vault of Sin series and I personally couldn’t wait to see what was coming next from the pen of Eden Summers.

A quick re-cap. The vault is owned by three friends. They run a successful business and each one of them plays their part in it. This second book revolves around Tate Jackson, one of the three. There’s something about Tate that draws you in. He doesn’t involve himself in the running of the vault, he leaves that side of the business to his partners. The question is why? Right from the beginning you could tell that Tate had a story to tell. This tortured soul who was hiding something from his friends, more importantly, had hidden the truth from his estranged wife Cassie.

As a married couple, both Tate and Cassie had often fantasised about visiting a sex club and visit one, they did. And that is where it all fell apart. Without giving too much away, I highly recommend you one-clicking this book to find out what occurred the night which left them both devastated and alone.

Tate wants a divorce, Cassie cannot understand why and neither could I. “Get a grip Tate,” I shouted at the book! This couple are so in love with each other it was frustrating to watch and read. I just wanted to dive into the pages of this book and bang their heads together. Cassie has let Tate steer their relationship thus far; however, now is the time for her to take control. She has twenty-eight days to make him see sense. And this is where the fun begins.

Fun I hear you say? Yes Fun…*Winks* The club will be hosting a masquerade party giving Cassie the ideal opportunity to go incognito. With a fake ID in hand, off she went full of nervousness and a large dose of curiosity. Perfect! Tate was to take a turn in the Vault that night which found himself irrevocably drawn to this mysterious woman. After exchanging a kiss, the feelings of guilt and betrayal to Cassie, his wife, makes him turn and run in a completely opposite direction.

All is not lost though. Tate realised that he can no longer deny the feelings he has for his wife and the pair are reunited. But what is the big secret that set this whole scenario in motion? All will be revealed. This revelation will leave Cassie distraught making Tate wish he could have saved his wife from hearing the truth about that one fateful night. Can love conquer all, or will it divide?

Last but not least, a note for Author Eden Summers. Thank you. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book but then again, I knew I would. It was well written and the story continuously flowed throughout; hence the five sinful stars I have awarded. Congratulations!
