Being the only woman working for a professional baseball team isn’t easy. As the San Diego Shock’s newest athletic trainer, Allie knows all about long hours, endless travel, and warding off players’ advances. Given she’s already the subject of a handful of rumors about how “lucky” she was to have earned such a coveted position, she can’t so much as flutter an eyelash a player’s way if she wants to be taken seriously.

But number eleven is doing more than fluttering eyelashes Allie’s way. Far more. Luke Archer is at the top of his game and doesn’t let the fear of striking out keep him from swinging. This is a motto he applies both on and off the field, but Allie appears immune, seeming to view Luke as nothing more than caution tape on legs.

He’s a player, and in Allie’s experience, they’re all the same. She won’t risk her job or her heart to another one, no matter how different this one claims to be. But as Allie gets to know him, she discovers the number eleven the public thinks they know is very different from the real Luke Archer. He seems too good to be true.

And maybe he is.

Allie will have to confront the stories attached to a player of Luke Archer’s stature and decide who she’ll put her faith in—The man she’s falling for? Or the rumors?

Working for a professional baseball team was going to be the end of my love life. The past two years confirmed that theory, as had the last text I’d received from my latest ex-boyfriend.

Half of the year on the road added to another half of the year working grueling hours that rivaled a doctor’s first year of residency equaled a whole lot of no free time to fill with a social agenda. Since being hired on by the San Diego Shock this season and the San Francisco Kings the year before that, the longest relationship I’d maintained spanned eight weeks.

This last one had barely cleared the four-week mark.

My lifestyle was costly, but it was worth it. Baseball was in my blood, and sports medicine was in my heart.

I’d grown up in a small Midwest town where people still got together for potlucks and everyone from the town hermit to the mayor attended a funeral. Where the only place you were expected to be after church on a Sunday was stretched out on the bleachers around the baseball field. It didn’t matter if it was a T-ball game or the high school championships—the bleachers were always packed.

Baseball was a religion where I grew up—it was stitched into the fibers of my life—so it was no surprise when I ended up with a baseball player. No, the surprise came after I’d followed him to college and found him in bed with someone else.

It had taken the wind right out of me, along with my tendency to trust first and doubt after. Ben had been sleeping around for a while by the time I found out—friends had known and said nothing—and that was the day I made a promise to myself to never let another guy hurt me as he had, to never be made a fool of like that.

After changing schools mid-year, I started studying sports medicine and never looked back. Or at least not often. I only looked back when I found myself feeling something similar to what I’d felt for Ben. The relationship never lasted long after that.

As evidenced by my newest failed relationship.

“Whose ass do I need to kick, Doc?”

Dropping my phone into my lap, I looked across the aisle to see who was sliding into the row across from me.

Luke Archer.

Known to fans as the best hitter on the Shock, if not in all of pro baseball. Known to women for his good looks and up-to-no-good smile. Known to Cosmo magazine as being voted the Finest Ass in professional baseball. And known by the athletic training staff as a well-rounded pain in our asses.

Not because he thought he knew better or was yet another prima donna—which the sport had no shortage of—but because he held to the old-school code of taking care of an injury by “walking it off.” If that didn’t work, then we could usually convince him to pop one or two pain relievers after the game, and sometimes, if he was feeling especially accommodating, he’d accept a bag of ice.

Luke Archer was the real man of steel, and no one to date had managed to convince him he was also made of those injury-prone materials known as flesh and blood.

“Doc?” Archer’s voice broke through my haze of thoughts. “Just give me his name and I’ll take care of it.”

The rest of the team and staff were shuffling down the aisle between us to find their seats on the team jet, but his stare aimed my way felt unyielding.

“What makes you think anyone’s ass deserves a kicking?” I asked.

I returned a high-five as Reynolds passed by. He’d twisted his ankle in the game earlier today, and I’d been the first on the field to get him taken care of. I’d been the last one out of the locker room to finish getting him taken care of too. As a noob, I had to work twice as hard. As a woman, I had to work ten times as hard.

“I have three younger sisters. I have more experience than most with guys deserving ass kickings.”

The last of the guys wandered by us. Without the break of their bodies coming between us, Archer’s stare became too intense. His eyes seemed capable of pinning me to the back of the seat.

The head athletic trainer, Dax Shepherd, attended to the “money” players—the ones like Archer, who brought fans to the stadium and were a large part of the Shock’s impressive win-to-loss ratio. Up until this very moment, I didn’t know Luke Archer was aware of my existence on this team or the planet.

“You really have three younger sisters?” I asked.

Unlike most of the female populace, I didn’t know every last fact about Luke Archer. The news about his parents had made headlines a few years back, and that was all I knew about his personal life.

“I really do. And I talk to or text all of them every day.”

“Plus you kick asses for them.”

Archer’s hazel eyes lightened. “Plus that.” He twisted in his seat so he was almost facing me, his eyes dropping to the phone in my lap. “So? No one messes with my sisters. And no one messes with my team.”

My forehead creased. “I’m not one of your teammates.”

“You’re a part of my team. Just because you don’t play the field or swing a bat doesn’t mean you’re not. You keep us healthy and strong out there.” When I cocked an eyebrow, he added, “And when we get injured, you make sure we get fixed up quickly so we can get back to doing what we love. You’re every bit as vital to this team as . . .” He glanced up and down the aisle like he was looking for someone to fill in the blank with.

“As Luke Archer?” I completed for him.

His answer to that was a lifting of his eyes. “I’m one man who can swing one bat.”

“One bat really, really hard. And very, very exactly,” I interjected.

He continued, “You make sure twenty-five men can keep swinging their own bats.”

“Well, there’s me, the two other athletic trainers, the physical therapist, the personal trainers, and the actual doctor who help out with that too. I can’t take all of the credit.”

“Come on. You work twice as hard as any of them, so you should at least take most of the credit.” When his phone started chiming in his slacks’ pocket, he pulled it out, turned it off, and hid it back in his pocket.

“And since the closest Shepherd and Coach Beckett have let me get to you is handing out a water bottle, how would you know that?”

He pointed at his eyes. “I’ve got two of these and use them for observation on occasion.”

“When they’re not searching for your next conquest?” I gave an internal groan the moment after I’d voiced something that should have stayed unsaid.

My relationships with the players had always been professional and rarely, if ever, delved into the realm of personal information. If it didn’t have to do with preventing or tending to injuries, I didn’t bring it up.

Until now. When I’d just suggested that Luke Archer had a reputation in every city the Shock had visited, every hotel they’d stayed in. Perfect way for my first real conversation with the star player of the team, and the whole of professional baseball, to go.

Archer stayed quiet, studying me with that tipped smile he was famous for.

“You know my opinion on rumors?” he said a minute later.

I was capable of nothing more than shaking my head.

“That they’re started by haters. Spread by fools. And accepted by idiots.”

My head tipped. “Are you calling me an idiot?”

His eyes flashed. “Are you calling me a manwhore?”

I studied him lounging in his seat with his legs kicked out in front of him, his wide chest stretching beneath his suit jacket, his long arms resting on the armrests.. His body was enough to weaken the resolve of someone as jaded to player players as I was, but his face didn’t play second-string.

Brown hair lightened by the sun, smooth skin darkened by it, a strong jaw, and hazel eyes that trended more toward the green end of the spectrum; Luke Archer was quite possibly the most attractive man I’d ever laid eyes on. According to Sports Anonymous’s random poll of five thousand women, he was the best-looking guy in professional sports today. The other few billion women on the planet would have agreed with that title, I assumed.

“Do you always take so long to answer a question?” Archer motioned at me, waiting.

“No,” I said, recalling the last question he’d asked me. Snap out of it. “I don’t think that you’re a  . . . manwhore,” I whispered the last part.

I’d had enough experience with the rumor mill to be a sympathetic party to the target of so many. Being one of the first and only female athletic trainers in professional sports had opened me up to a hundred rumors when I’d been hired. All versions of them had to do with me fucking my way into the position.

“Good.” Archer nodded, seeming satisfied. “Because you certainly don’t seem like an idiot.”

               He nodded again. “Welcome.”

That was when the pilot’s voice echoed through the team jet, running through his usual spiel. We were leaving Tampa and heading up to Chicago. Now that the season was in full swing, I lost track of the cities we were leaving and the ones we were heading toward. All of my attention was focused on the players and getting them through the season as injury-free as possible.

“I’m still waiting for that name, Doc.” Archer clicked his seat belt into place when one of the attendants stopped beside him, looking ready to strap it into place for him.

When she saw mine unfastened, all I got was a lifted brow and a pointed finger before she moved on to the next aisle.

“Oh, it’s okay. He’s not worth it.” I lifted my phone toward him before dropping it in the duffel bag I kept on hand at all times. Bandages, tape, painkillers, and a small cooler of ice packs were always at the ready whenever I was with the team. “Any guy who breaks up with someone via text message isn’t worth much.”

“Really? Over text?” Archer’s eyes narrowed. “That’s the reason the ass-kicking was invented. For those types of guys.”

I shrugged as the plane started to taxi down the runway, the interior lights dimming. “We haven’t even been together a month. Truthfully, it lasted longer than I thought it would. This kind of lifestyle”—I twirled my finger around the airplane—“makes it difficult to sustain a long-term relationship.”

“That’s why I’m not a fan of them.”

               “Long-term relationships?”

“Any kind of relationship,” he said.

I nodded my understanding. The players had it worse than the team staff. At least in terms of having to question if a person was into them for who they were or because of their job, and the fame and money that came with it.

“I’m either practicing for a game, playing a game, recovering from a game, or fueling up and resting for a game. There’s not time for much else,” he said.

Leaning into my armrest, I realized how strange it was to be having such an easy conversation with Luke Archer. It felt natural, not forced. Most of the players would take a moment to chat with me about something game-related, but I was still the new kid on the block. I felt like I had to pass some test before they’d accept me as a member of the team.

Archer didn’t seem to be of the same mind though.

“Yeah, I know. It’s like you need to find someone who can just travel with you wherever you go, right?” I said, thinking how much easier it would to be in a relationship with someone I got to see on a daily basis without two computer screens.

“Exactly. Someone who understands the lifestyle. Appreciates the sacrifices you have to make.”

My head fell back into the headrest from the inertia of takeoff, but I could still feel Archer’s eyes on me. “Someone who understands that the job comes first. Someone who doesn’t get insecure or jealous or bent out of shape that they get the few precious minutes in between the job.”

When my head turned toward him again, I found Luke Archer staring at me with a kind of intensity I hadn’t seen aimed my way in a long time. My breath caught, and even though the strength of his stare threatened to overwhelm me, I held his gaze.

“Someone who understands the game. The commitment. The time. The sacrifice. Someone who’s as committed to it as you are.” One corner of his mouth twitched, carving a dimple into his cheek. “It’s not like you could ever expect to find a person like that sitting in the row across the aisle from you, right?”

The plan for Cici Carrington was to steadily climb UP the corporate ladder, and hopefully do so without her skirt tucked into the back of her underpants. Unfortunately, there was no contingency plan for the aftermath of spending a night trapped in an elevator with a suit-wearing Elevator Sex God named Cole Danvers. A one…or two-time dalliance wouldn’t normally throw off the course of someone’s life…unless you find out you have to work together the next day.

To further complicate matters, Cici’s best friend is also her Human Resources Director. She has to hide her secret from every person she knows. Her only confidant is her one-eyed cat, and his loyalty is tenuous at best. Toss in an accidental mugging, a bungled disguise, secret meetings, and unintentional arson, and Cici’s beautiful, careful plan has fallen by the wayside.

Perhaps there aren’t any hard and fast rules in life. Sometimes you can have your cake and eat it too. Sometimes following the rules doesn’t get you ahead.

And perhaps sometimes you can get off between floors…

Kindle Friends Forever 4  Review by Rachel & Sharon Thérèse

First of all, we have to say how well timed reading this debut novel of Katherine Steven’s was! We really are mood readers and our previous book was a real tearjerker so this was a welcome change. Some of the scenes in this book gave us full on belly laughs! In fact, nearly every page had a witty line or three. The banter in this book was nothing short of hilarious and definitely fed our appetite for dry, sarcastic humour. We loved the Stars Wars/Star Trek innuendo which for us was the icing on the cake making this book one of the funniest reads of the year!

“Hey, big boy, how about you let me awaken your force? …… How about you show me your lightsabre, and I’ll let you go where no man has gone before?”
“Chewbacca doesn’t have a lightsabre and that’s Star Trek.”

Told entirely from Cici’s point of view in first person, we enjoyed her personality immensely regardless of her foot in mouth syndrome. She’s hardworking, just a tad clumsy and extremely career oriented. Her employer is currently undergoing a major restructure which results in promotion and alongside that, there’s an added bonus of a gorgeous new assistant. Now, Cici isn’t exactly introduced to her new subordinate under traditional circumstances. Let us give you a little spoiler free clue with this quote that made us laugh out loud.

“Are you going down on mewith me? Down. Are you going down? To the first floor, I mean. First floor, I mean. I didn’t mean anything else.”

Unpretentious, smart and controlled, it was easy for us to imagine not only how well Cole wore his suit, but just how well he owned it. Meeting his new boss was to be a revelation; however, not for him. After a ‘sexcapade’ occurred, an awkward introduction made us cringe and giggle in equal measure. On the verge of a comedy sketch, we couldn’t believe that the woman he’d be working with would go so far to hide her identity.

“Is that a new outfit? No wait. Is that your Herve Leger skirt? What happened?”
“There was an incident.”
“Any chance you’ll elaborate?”
“None whatsoever.”
“I figured as much……”

The character development in this book was second to none and we can’t not mention one of our favourites, Maggie, who is Cici’s best friend and co-worker. She steals the show in some of the scenes in this book so it would be a crime not to share her personality with you. Maggie was simply a breath of fresh air! Her sass and quirkiness made us crack up with her shenanigans in trying to get a man! One of the funniest moments was her dragging Cici on a road trip to ensnare a trucker! Yes, you read that correctly.

“Don’t forget to call me Maggie May. I don’t want them to think I’m some yuppie city girl.”
“Maggie, you are some yuppie city girl. You have lived in the Upper East Side all your life. You’ve never even set foot inside a public school. You might have forgotten, but your picture was actually on Urban dictionary for two whole days next to ‘Rich White Girl’.”

Even though this book is an absolute hoot to read, it still didn’t leave much to the imagination in terms of the most sensual scenes one could ever wish for! At certain points, we had to stop and take a breather or two. Yes Ms Stevens, you certainly did deliver in convincing us that Cole and Cici experienced some amazing sexual chemistry. For the most part, they literally had difficulty keeping their hands off each other which lead to even more hilarity!

“I want to be spontaneous and sexy, but I just finished reorganizing these files before I left yesterday. Do you think we could be spontaneous on the credenza instead?”

If you need cheering up, or perhaps want a light and humorous read with a touch of emotion, this book is for you. Why not take a chance on this brilliant debut novel by Katherine Stevens? The only reason this book was not a 5 star read for us was because we missed hearing Cole’s thoughts. We are huge fans of dual point of views and thought we were a little short changed or maybe just a little greedy for more Cole Danvers. Nevertheless, this is just a personal opinion and understand this may not bother other readers. Overall this is a very well-constructed and balanced read with just the right amount of comedy, silliness and of course, romance. 10 – 4. Over and out! (Pun intended).

“What on earth made you think I’d want to wear this?”
“You said you wanted to take things to the next level, so I assumed that meant role play. We crossed just about everything else off the list.”

Five Stars

I was over the moon when given the opportunity to review this book. This is the fourth in the series and they just get better and better.

Chantal has written a story where emotions play a big part. I found myself gripping my Kindle at some points and then the tears started to flow. As I got into this read, I had the pleasure of meeting up with great characters from previous books, and meeting a few new ones was when the laughter started. From the beginning, we see a young Rake and Bailey in love and talking about their future which intrigued me. I couldn’t wait to find out what was going to happen between these two and I wasn’t in the slightest bit disappointed.

Growing up, Adam aka Rake had no one except his sister and his girl. But after being broken hearted, he joined the Wind Dragons MC where he changed into our bad boy biker. He loves women; in fact, I would go as far as saying he is the worst one in the whole club. Out having fun with his buddies and sister, he finds her talking to the one woman he hates with a passion, the one he still loves with everything he has. Hmm… indeed a fine line, I thought to myself. Their eyes lock, old feelings overpower him and oh boy, did he make a good fist of telling her what she could do. It’s as if he’s haunted by her since he keeps seeing reminders at every corner. By putting two and two together, his anger is intensified by what looks like even more betrayal.

I really connected to Bailey. This young, single mom who has no other family, has a job she loves and always wanted. Out on the town, she bumps into two besties from her childhood, one being the sister of the man she loved. Seeing Rake again brings back many hurtful memories. He has no idea that Bailey is hiding something from him. Regardless of everything they’ve been through or how they feel, she had to do this to protect Rake from the truth. Finally, when I thought I couldn’t take anymore and was shouting at her to just get on with it and tell him, she does what she did literally shattering my heart. One problem; I thought things couldn’t get worse for them. How very wrong I was!

Secrets are revealed, actions and loyalties are put to the test. Will they be able to move forward? Can the past be buried and all be forgiven? You’ll have to read it to find out. I can assure you that you won’t be let down as this book has everything and more besides. Most definitely a five star read Ms Fernando and anxiously waiting for the next read.

A love like this comes along once in a blue moon—it’s worth fighting for.

But is it a love worth dying for?

Kindle Friends Forever: 5 ★ Review by Donna Elsegood

We get the final chapter in the Story of Us following the lives of Ayden and Elisabeth Stone. It has been a magical six parts to their story. Full of suspense, mystery and a very passionate love. And what a thrilling story it has been.

As have all of them, this book included, has been inspired by music and while I have the radio gently playing in the background, strangely The Power of Love is playing by Gabrielle Aplin and how apt when writing a review for such a deep love story.

Ayden and Beth have been in grave danger from an unhappy source since time beyond memory. He had been involved in a sting operation, and although their love can never separate them, Beth has been sent away for her own safety. Ayden will go to great lengths to save his Beth and their unborn children even if that meant sacrificing himself to keep them from harm.

“You’ve made every wish I ever had come true, Ayden. This is beyond wonderful. To think that our children can grow up here in this magical place… I can’t believe it.”

This last segment rounds off a wonderful story told exquisitely well by Sydney. Her storytelling techniques drew me in from the very first page of this series right up until the last one. Her style is profound, balanced and I would even go to the great length of saying, poetic. There is no doubt whatsoever that her dab hand in penmanship helped me visualise the muse. It was as if I was with them, willing for all the evil to become banished and for the pair to live out their fairy-tale with a happy ever after. But it’s not going to be an easy feat to get to their destination in life. I was on a rollercoaster; mesmerised and invested in the evil insurgents to get their comeuppance and let them live in peace.

“No. Enjoying. Always enjoying.”

I’ve chosen these quotes because they have always been my favourites throughout their magical romance. How they are ‘always enjoying’ each other at everywhither; how they saved each other along the way, literally enchanted me and made this read so exceptional. I watched Beth grow stronger from the beginning to the end and was delighted to see that in turn, she became the protector of Ayden. Despite the fact that it had been the other way around, this showed me the depth of their relationship and their true feelings for each other.

I don’t want to give too much away but just to reiterate The story of Us, it is a love story unlike any other. I am a huge fan of Sydney and although it is sad to say goodbye to the Stones which I have learnt to adore, we get closure in their story. I gave five stars because it was gripping, exciting and exceedingly hot and steamy.

Behind me the door opens. I don’t bother turning. Only when I hear the lock turn and the light is switched off do I clench my fists, but before I can stand someone scented with a familiar fragrance slides their hands over my shoulders, and slips them inside my jacket in a kind of criss-cross. Spontaneously, I take hold of their slim wrists.

“Woah! What the…?”

“Calm down, Mr. Stone,” she whispers in my right ear, her hair tickling my neck. “This is going to be fun for both of us. Why don’t you sit back and enjoy the ride? I know I will.”

I tighten my grip on her wrists and remove her hands from my chest, drawing my fingers over her left hand, along a wedding band and a large engagement ring. “I’m waiting for a friend. You’d better run along, I’m not interested. There won’t be any free rides tonight, sweetheart.”

Still cloaked in darkness, she runs her fingers through my hair and circles the chair, raising her other hand to her mouth seductively. “That’s a shame. I heard you like to play.”

“Maybe I could sit on your knee?” She pushes my right leg from its comfortable position and attempts to slide across my knee.

She’s petite and I sense, from her voice and svelte movements, probably very beautiful, not unlike Beth in shape and size—but she isn’t Beth.

Is she?

The outline of her hair tells me it’s shoulder length, dark…

Beths blonde

I tip her body backwards from left to right, resting my hand for a split second on her stomach, aligning her face to catch what little luminosity there is from the blue neon light spearing its way through the decorative wrought-iron work. I catch a glimpse of a nicely defined jawline, bright eyes… I try to lift her forcefully from my knee, but she wraps her arms around my neck and folds her body into mine, provocatively. Her hot breath grazes my neck.

“You don’t feel like you’re not interested,” she whispers, positioning her left thigh on top of my burgeoning erection. “Are you playing hard to get, Ayden?”

“I’ve come all this way to see you and here you are, fighting me off. Now that’s a first.” She giggles into my ear.

Taking her by surprise, I flip her off my knee and turn her over and onto the desk, taking both of her arms and positioning them above her head, pinning her in place. She tries to wriggle free but I have both her wrists firmly in my one-handed grasp.

Pressing my body over and into her, gently, I whisper into her ear. “Now who’s playing hard to get?”

“Is this how you treat strange women you meet in the dark, Mr. Stone?” she asks, with little humour, her left cheek pressed against the leather surface.

“Not as a rule, but I’m willing to make an exception for you, Mrs. Stone.” Her body shakes beneath me as she laughs, rocking against a cock which is now attempting to escape from my boxers.

I give her wig a gentle tug. “Are you in disguise?”

“Not really. I read somewhere that you liked brunettes.” She smiles that smile and suddenly—in a flash—everything’s right with the world; like a man suffering from a terminal disease who has found a miracle cure. I’m healed.

I feel her warm palm against my right cheek and lean into it and close my eyes. “Am I glad to see you.

“How did you know it was me?” she asks, tipping her head to one side, searching my eyes for any trace of a lie.

Removing her wig to free her blond locks from the cap, I explain, “Among other things, I recognised your voice—“

She snaps back. “—but I disguised it.”

“Baby, you could whisper the phone book and you’d have my cock twitching. Did you seriously think I wouldn’t recognise your voice?” I rub my nose against hers. “Are you pouting? Would you have preferred me to carry on longer, letting you think I was about to fuck some random woman?”

She shakes her head.

“I didn’t think so. You didn’t like it when I bent you over the desk. I felt you tensing and squirming beneath me.”

She gives my tie a tug. “That’s because I was convinced you didn’t know it was me.”

“I thought so, and, as for Jake … he wouldn’t bring me here to set me up with another woman. He wouldn’t do that. So … how long do we have?” I reach down to her derriere and scoop her up in my hands, pressing her against me.

“An hour and a half at tops.” She sighs.

“So, my dear wife, now you have me at your disposal what do you propose we do with the limited time we have?”

Aiming to tease me further she nibbles her thumbnail in that adorable way she does, feigning innocence. “There is something I’d like to do. If you don’t mind…?”

Just name it.

“There’s little chance that I’ll mind—whatever it is. I’m about to bust a zip here.”

She bites her lip. “I’d noticed that.”

Turning us around, so my ass rests on the edge of the desk, she reaches behind her and pulls the chair closer.

“I’m listening.”

“I want to take you in my mouth and make you come. How does that sound?”

I throw back my head at the very thought of it. “How does it sound? Are you kidding me? After three days of jerking off in the shower … I’d say that sounds fucking awesome.” I’m nodding and smirking, trying unsuccessfully to hold off the laughter.

I love this woman. Not for the fact that she’s travelled a thousand miles to see me or that she’s about to blow me, but because she instinctively knows what I need—the closeness, the intimacy that we’ve both been denied for too long. Little does she know all that is about to change.

I cradle her face in my hands, caressing her cheeks with my thumbs, sliding my fingers into her hair, breathing her in like an intoxicating drug I can’t get enough of. “Distance can stop me from kissing you, but it can’t stop me from loving you, Beth. You’re never far from my thoughts, baby. To have you here, is more than I could have hoped for.”

Sensing my need for attention, she smiles, descends my body, undoing my tie, leaving it spread out across my jacket while she unfastens buttons, then a belt, then my zip; all the time maintaining eye contact, holding me captive with the intensity of her stare.

I feel my breathing faltering as she dusts my tensing stomach muscles with feather-light kisses.

With the chair perfectly positioned, she sets about releasing me from my boxers, leaving my clothing pleated around my groin. She follows the dark trail leading to my throbbing cock.

Momentarily her eyes stray from mine, and she looks down at the extent of my arousal. She says nothing but there are words hanging in the air like heat rising from our bodies. With little need for actual words, she rests her cheek against my groin, almost reverently. I lift my right hand from the edge of the desk and fold it over her head, not to increase pressure, but to offer her my blessing. This half-light has created the perfect ambiance; there’s a stillness, a serenity that silently reminds us that the distance between us these past weeks has not lessened the depth of our love—if anything, it has brought us closer. We’re here together at this makeshift altar, ready to worship each other with saintly devotion.

The bad boy.
The fuck up.
The thief.

That was me.
Once a king,
Now a wanderer.

I’d thrown the best parts of me away, over and over again.
I was reckless.
Still am.
I’d been exiled.
I did my time.
I’ve cleaned up.
Well, sort of.
I got plans.
Yeah, good ones.

Then I ran into her.

A bolt of lightning
Out of reach.

The woman I once scorned years ago
is now the woman I can’t live without.
I need what I didn’t think I’d ever need again.
I want and want and want.

She’s the epicenter of the war I’ve triggered,
of the battle in my rusted heart.
I may be as reckless as I ever was,
but I’m determined as fuck.

To hell with it.

I want it all.

Kindle Friends Forever 4.5  Review by Sharon Thérèse

Not one to read the blurb as I love going into a read blind, I have to admit that this wasn’t the case and made an exception with the fourth book in the Lock & Key series. As I have read the whole series, was and still am bowled over by all the memorable characters in an MC saga overflowing with suspense and twists and turns at every corner, I consider my shortcoming excusable. And what a synopsis and a half! In my book, Ms Porter is the blurb queen par excellence! So if this doesn’t whet your appetite, goodness knows what will! One has to mention that this cannot be read as a standalone; however, the author has gone to great lengths with her structural writing. Highly polished and with a flow second to none, every one of the club members’ history or story for a better word, is carefully integrated into the One Eyed Jacks’ club nudging one’s memory. I really felt strongly about this book. It was if I underwent a change; even matured and grew alongside the two protagonists who aren’t by any means young bunnies or ignorant to the fact that they’d had a rocky past. Two people that just had to have their say, had to open their hearts and confess all in their own way with time, patience and above all, understanding.

To be outlawed in the only club he had ever known and loved was for Butler, harsh. He’d made many dreadful mistakes. Now he wants to redeem himself, be accepted by those he values and prove his worthiness. I loved how I was offered first-hand what went wrong; why, and how he was going to make amends. There is no doubt whatsoever that I saw a huge change in him and definitely for the better. Going back to his roots has its consequences and are not as easy as I thought it would be. Flipping the pages to find out why he’d returned with whom he did, frustrated the pants of me. Beforehand, a coincidence occurs making me think his future was cut and dry. Nope, quite a twist here but he’ll eventually see the light of day and start sowing the seed with a cautiousness that literally sold me and totally fitting in a love story between two mature adults. So was it truly a case of slowly, slowly catchy monkey? Yeah! I can’t put into words how much I liked his modus operandi regardless of the setbacks he’s going to have.

Why Tania disappeared from the face of the earth for nearly eleven years leaving behind her loved ones are details to be revealed. But I will say this; feeling isolated in a world empty of emotions, frustrated in her profession and in a relationship that wasn’t going anywhere, she wants back. Hers weren’t really mistakes; more like bad choices and no way comparable with Butler’s background. Hmm… discovering who she’d rubbed shoulders with in the past and the reasons why completely threw me. But how could I not fall for this lass! So loving, so family oriented, so gutsy and yearning to have her own identity. No holds barred, she takes the bull by the horns and does what she has always wanted to do and oh boy, does she do it well! Ooh, and I simply adored the way she made friends with the enemy and when the truth is divulged, she even stands up for this person. Yeah, Tania truly has a marvellous soul whose heart is as big as the state she lives in.

The sizzling chemistry which jumps off the pages I found at times, quite frustrating. Well, in one scene when the sweetest of delicacies were added to the heat of the moment, my toes literally curled. How then could I not forgive these two love birds for their tentative start then! A past happening of the most embarrassing kind is a major factor that has to be taken into consideration and makes for very interesting reading as it does actually change the course of events and influences Butler and Tania’s stance towards each other. Therefore, throwing light on this detail was for me, extremely important.

Moments of angst in this MC’s political club issues need more diplomacy than fisticuffs and much less than we’ve been used to. Whatever problem arose, seeing them being dealt with coherent dialogue held my attention throughout; in fact, I can’t say how much I liked the opposition! Butler falls into his role perfectly and is prepared to pull his weight alongside characters from previous books. What an absolute pleasure it was meeting up with the gang once again.

As always, Cat goes to town with the banter and I can’t put into words how much I loved this. Yes, KFF are total banter snobs! Nevertheless, I would have liked this read to be a teeny weeny bit shorter and the epilogue confused me a tad. I felt some of the details drawn out but saying that, it could well be me! I wasn’t in the least short-changed though. And the covers of the whole series have to be mentioned. Deary me, beyond titillating. Bravo to you Cat Porter for a marvellous follow up to an unforgettable series!

Kindle Friends Forever: Rachel’s 5 Review

** ARC provided by Publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review **

She’s sunshine all right. Brightest light of my days.

I was so thrilled when this book landed on my Kindle! To say I was counting down the months since I read the first instalment in this series, ‘Loud is How I Love You’, would be an understatement. There is just something really authentic about this author’s writing which I’m sure is down to the fact she is a musician herself so rightly so, she conveys the ins and outs of band life perfectly. I’ve read countless books in this genre before, but this one hit the spot perfectly. Like the first book in the series, this is also written in first person but we also get dual point of view which for me is perfection! Hearing both sides gives a better understanding of the story which I can connect to much better with.

“What happens on the road stays on the road….”
“… Okay, deal. We lock all unseemly tour incidents in the Soft vault….”

This story circles around the bassist, Cole from Stars on the Floor (Soft) and Sonia (Sunny) Emmy – Lou’s best friend. Cole is such a talented guy but is hiding a secret from his band members which could ultimately change their musical future. He’s not had the best start in life, abusive father and an alcoholic mother. Yes, the band is a hobby for Cole; however, he sees his band mates more like family, but he has a responsibility he simply cannot ignore. Cole is very aware how hard it is to get a deal with a record company, he’s under no illusion at all. He’s all set to go out on a high on this summer’s tour but he doesn’t quite count on the attention Sunny brings to their group and also the incredible attraction he has for her. Well, that’s just brings a whole load of chemistry into the mix which somewhat complicates things for him. My heart broke for him on several occasions. He just didn’t feel worthy of Sunny. If there was ever a case of two people brought up on different sides of the track them this would be it.

“It’s never going to be enough, Cole. You’re just going to have to fuck me like this forever.”
“I can do that.”

Ahhh Sunny! What a star she was. I loved her. Spirited, sassy, incredibly loyal and determined to help out her friends for their three-week road trip, Sunny goes all out! She offered to assist ‘Soft’ in their upcoming tour as Tour Manager and she doesn’t want to let them down. Sunny has always had a crush on Cole and when things start to happen between them, she just can’t quite believe her luck! Sadly, her experience with men hasn’t been the best. Cole on the other hand is quite the ladies’ man, so she doesn’t expect anything to happen when the tour is over. Unlike Cole, Sunny’s had a very privileged upbringing and been given every opportunity to excel and shine. She’s a very talented musician herself but due to severe case of stage fright, she’s not able to continue in her chosen career.

“You don’t look better through beer goggles. The problem is you look way too fine without them. You’re like a damn demigod.”
“Wait, just a demigod? I was shooting for Zeus.”

Stay Until I Break is an excellent continuation of the first book in the series. The story is very well written and brilliantly constructed. You also get more Travis and Emmy – Lou and also Joey, the fourth band member. This can be read as a standalone but I would highly recommend you read them in order to get the full ‘Soft’ effect. I don’t think I’ve ever highlighted as many quotes and lines as much as I did in a long time. Again Ms Brown excels in her witty and razor sharp prose. All of the characters not only had me swooning, cringing at some of their ‘on the road’ antics, but also had me laughing out loud! At times I felt like I was actually on the tour with them. It was sensory overload! It felt like I could actually hear their music and smell the back seat of Steady Beth! I’m not sure if there is another book in this series but I really hope Joey gets his own story. There’s a character we get a small glimpse of towards the end and I would dearly love to see how they would interact with each other. No pressure, Ms Brown!

“I’m sorry, Sonia. I’m not the guy you thought I was.”
“No, you really aren’t.”
“You’re so much more than that.”

KFF’s 5 Review HERE

I’m the author of LOUD IS HOW I LOVE YOU, a New Adult novel about two indie rock kids falling in love in the 90s. And doing it. A bunch of times. Since there’s some question or debate these days about whether sex is a requirement for a book to be considered NA, I’m just going to put that right out there. There’s sex in this book. That’s what makes it sexy! That and guitars. Guitars are always sexy. So are amps. And guys who carry amps for their girlfriends are extra sexy.

LOUD is based very (very, very) loosely on my experiences fronting bands in the 90s New Brunswick, NJ music scene. It’s not actually about me or my band, but let’s just say, if I hadn’t cut my teeth playing clubs from Baltimore to Boston in my youth, I don’t know that I could have written this book in quite this way.

LOUD was published by Intermix/Penguin in January 2016! And hey you can actually buy it from Amazon! The follow-up, Stay Until We Break is now live and available on all platforms.

My agent is the ever-patient and sharp-dressing wizard chess aficionado, Brooks Sherman at The Bent Agency in Brooklyn. I am so very lucky to have him in my corner.

I also write YA and other romance. I have a picture book sitting in a drawer and four different ideas for middle grade novels. I write a lot, is basically what I’m trying to say, when I’m not otherwise working or wrangling children.

I studied English Literature at UMASS, Amherst a long, long time ago and I was a total Arthurian Legends dork. I once wrote a 5 page poem about a llama and King Arthur for my friend’s birthday. I wanted to be a novelist way back then but I was too young. (I’m not saying there’s an age requirement or anything, I’m just saying that I wasn’t very good at writing books when I was 19 or 22.) I didn’t want to teach English (why not? I really don’t know, it was just a feeling), so after I graduated I went and did a lot of other unrelated things instead, some of them terribly interesting and others not.
