There’s a first time for everything.
Lark Wainwright used to be fearless. Her life was a series of adventures, each one more exhilarating than the last. But her recent overseas adventure was one too many. Now she’s home and in one piece. Mostly. But her nights are filled with terror.
When her best friend offers her a stay at the orchard in exchange for help at the farmers’ markets, Lark jumps at the chance to spend fall in Vermont. But her nightmares don’t stop. Desperate to keep her fragile state a secret, she relies on the most soft-spoken resident of the Shipley Farm to soothe her when her dreams prove too much.
Zachariah is a survivor, too. It’s been four years since he was tossed aside by the polygamist cult where he grew up. He’s found a peaceful existence on the Shipley’s farm, picking apples and fixing machinery. But getting thrown away by your own people at nineteen leaves a mark on a guy. He doesn’t always know what to make of a world where movie quotes are the primary means of communication. Before hitchhiking to Vermont, he’d never watched TV or spoken on the phone.
Actually, there are a lot of things he’s never done.

This book is truly a labour of love in all aspects and we can’t praise the author enough for offering us such an extraordinarily well-written book. It warms your heart, makes you smile, plunders your hopes only to pick you up and give you back everything you’ve ever wished for. It’s difficult to put down but at the same time, this is a read to be savoured. Don’t rush it; turn the pages as if it were the last one and simply sit back and enjoy. Can it be read as a standalone? I think we’re going to be adventurous and say yes! As the saying goes, “Every book tells its story” and it couldn’t be more true in this series.
“Your fine here, Lark. Everything is fine.”
Sometimes we love so much and are so concerned for the well-being of others that we have to take a step back and give them space and time to heal. Zachariah has the patience and faith to do this. Even though he’s innocent, he’s old beyond his years and has an acuity we could all learn from. A tough start in life doesn’t stop the poor lad from making an effort to better his position. The simplest of things we take for granted were for him, huge. But he’s astute, picks things up quickly and to say he’s hard-working would be putting it lightly. In fact, he wore us out just reading about his willingness to help everyone who had been so kind to him since he’d found his sanctuary. Zach is a thinker. He keeps his feelings to himself, every move he makes is calculated and not one of them was disputable. And listen to this. . . he’s built like a freakin’ brick-house! But that isn’t the reason we fell head over heels for him. His generous heart won us over.
“I’ll be your Apostate Farm.
Lark Wainwright isn’t the ‘Wild Child’ she used to be. The support and love her parents have for her isn’t enough to overcome a traumatic experience. She’d lost her self-confidence for reasons to be revealed in the story; nonetheless, she’s desperately trying to get her old sassy-self-back. She puts on a brave face and goes to visit her bestie. Her destiny’s place is her refuge. But is it? If we’d had the opportunity to land where she did, we’d be in our element and we thought it had the perfect ambience for her recovery. However, all is not what it seems.
“I was such a perfect wreck.”
Lark is surrounded by the most comprehensible family that anyone could ask for. They’re all delightful, so damn lovable and don’t ask questions. We have to include the man who runs the show with the precision of a Swiss watch and whose grumpiness never outweighed his concern for Lark. Or for that matter, the love of his life, his family or his workers. Griffin. Ooh, for the likes of our mere souls, this guy is in the whole of the series, our man!
“Have fun Wild Child. Stay loose, Zach.”
Since every single one of Griff’s family have their own well-developed characters and their own day to day problems exquisitely described by the author, you must read this book to appreciate the utter beauty of it. All the goings on at Shipley farm which for us, was paradise, is much more than we could have imagined. The scenery, orchards and the process of picking, distilling and getting the end product to the market is a lesson in itself. Reading this series will provoke your taste buds to try such as is the variety of apples grown on Griffin’s farm. You’ll want to taste the scrumptious apple tarts, mouth-watering cakes, jelly, jam or better still, their finest cider made from the best apples on the planet!
“What’s on the agenda today”
Now then, we have to mention how delightful is was watching Zach and Lark’s relationship blossom. Oops, pun unintended! It’s not an easy-peasy ride for these two young adults. Zach has trust issues and Lark is afraid she’ll break the most beautiful man who has ever entered her world. They have to find themselves, learn to reach out to each other and while the clock is ticking away, make some life-changing decisions. Their chemistry is undeniable, though. We were so grateful that the author held back on the passionate scenes. If you like reads where the protagonists jump into the sack and wham bam thank you ma’am, you might be a tad disappointed. That being said, their constant eye contact blinded us and we loved how the sexual tension simmered just below the surface. Wait for it though. . . it’s coming. When it does explode, we were left breathless! We never expected ugly cry moments which consequently reduced us to a babbling mess, so get your man-sized tissues ready!
“Sex is ten percent skill and ninety percent listening. Who’s a better listener than you?
“What am I listening for?”
“You’ll know as soon as you hear it.”
The companionship, light-hearted ribbing and overflowing banter in a solid plot sold us lock, stock and barrel. The story is told in past tense which isn’t one of our fave narrative techniques. Nonetheless, never once was our reading enjoyment hindered by it. The dual point of view used was a real plus as we had the opportunity to delve into the thoughts of Zach and Lark.
“Is it egotistical of me to ask whether I’ve ever made it into your best dreams?”
“They’re all about you.”
After getting to know all members of this family so well, one of us was a bit concerned at the ending. There isn’t a cliffy as such but she felt there was space for more revelations and would’ve liked to have seen the celebration of an important event. With a sigh of relief on her part, a little dicky bird whispered in her ear and now she’s a happy bunny! Ms Bowen, this offering is a true KEEPSAKE! Keep on writing ‘cause we’ll definitely keep on reading. . . BRAVO!
A couple of our fave quotes:
“Maybe you had pleasant dreams after four thirty. But after treating the rest of us to basically a porno sound track, it was woody city in the bunk room.”
“I’m so sick of being of afraid.”
“You don’t have to be anymore. If anyone wants to get you, they’ll have to go through me.”

I’ve loved him as long as I can remember.
The gangly boy with big brown eyes and unruly hair who grew up into an intoxicating man. He wears scruff like he invented it and ambles with a swagger that makes panties drop.
We grew up together. We played Ghost in the Graveyard. Had our own rock band. It didn’t matter that he was five years older than me. It didn’t matter that he looked at me as a kid sister even as I grew into woman. It didn’t even matter when he left me behind to go to college and start his adult life.
He’d be back.
He was always meant to be mine.
He came back, all right. But instead of smelling of promises, he stunk of betrayal. And he destroyed me—us—the day he married my sister instead of me.
So I did the only thing a girl like me in my position could do.
I got my revenge.
I married his brother, Kael.
Now we’re one big happy f*cking family

4.5 ★ Review by Sharon Thérèse
Although I don’t normally read the blurb as I love going in blind, the cover attracted me no end so I read on. One of the gals at KFF kindly asked me what book I fancied for my birthday and ooh boy, my choice was spot on. Thank you, Claire! Putting it down wasn’t an option and well-knowing I wouldn’t have been able to sleep without finishing the book, I read until daft-o’clock and have no regrets whatsoever. My jaw hit the floor after turning the last page! Throw in a mammoth book hangover and a sleep deficit for good measure has to be a good sign, doesn’t it? To say all my emotions were stretched to the limit would be putting it mildly, too. Moments of elation, frustration and utter sadness left me in a blubbering mess. Heck; I loved the way the author’s sole purpose was to arouse the reader’s interest to the point of near craziness. Yep, Ms Kreig’s narrative skills got my mind spinning out of control and I still can’t shake off the residues it left. I don’t want to either!
This is going to be a difficult book to review as I really want you to enjoy it without reading the dreaded spoilers that we come across every now and then. Two families have a very tight relationship for reasons to be revealed. Two brothers. Two sisters. Their story is told from the main protagonists’ point of view and in present tense which was without a doubt, a huge plus for me. I appreciate this writing technique since it’s not the easiest one for the best of storytellers. I also have to mention that we have the opportunity to know exactly what was going on from word go right up to present day. How Ms Kreig did this I cannot say but I flipping well loved it.
“I want to kiss these fucking lips, Maverick. And not a kiss of a boy who has been friends with a girl for almost thirty years. But as a lover.”
I bow down to Kael. Loving like no other in total silence must be heart-breaking. His feelings are so unconditional for the girl of his dreams and under his skin that his suffering became mine. His nobility is so blindsiding that he won my heart but worried my soul. Who has your back at all times regardless of whatever circumstances one happens to be in justifies respect. I was by his side throughout the book and never let go. Through his eyes, I learnt how sitting on the fence consumes, and how it seemed an impossible task to win the love of his life over.
“While he was the sun that lit our world, you were the darkness that shadowed mine.”
Killian is just as drop-dead gorgeous as his younger brother, Kael. Nevertheless, he brought out many conflicting feeling in me. Once again, all is to be disclosed in this nonstop love-triangle with a difference. If I loved him in one sentence, I could have gladly throttled him in another. You won’t find out why he destroyed the gal he promised never-ending love to until you least expect it. Ooh my goodness me! What a bloody twist and a half in this story! If my heart was shattered to smithereens reading his brother’s story, I was in an utter turmoil regarding this man who shows his beautiful colours in such a way that made me cry like a baby. Did I say his Killian’s brother was selfless? Well, this man’s graciousness overwhelmed me. Never have I had to make such a hard choice between two outstanding characters. Which team I was on can’t possibly be revealed as I’d like you to make your own minds up.
“I want you Maverick. I’m in love with you. I always have been and I want us to be together.”
Maverick is torn. In most of the story, she’s going through hell with who she wants to be with. Happy scenes are far and few between but a delight when she has them. She couldn’t care less for fashion, she’s not in the slightest bit girlie but her sex appeal slithers off the pages. In fact, I would go as far as saying that she’s a young woman with no complexes and her aggressiveness to stand up for her beliefs bowled me over. I loved reading about her healthy appetite. . . shake hands with you gal! She shuns her privileges but her very existence is beyond complicated. Life plays many games and she’s going to have to make some extremely difficult decisions.
“…I’m perfectly comfortable in my own skin.”
This is the first book I have read by this author and just WOW! In fact, I dare those of you who haven’t read this author’s works to read this book! I can assure you that you won’t be let down. The plot is cannily thought-out, its pace is incredibly fast and if I found the tiniest fault, it had to be the ending. I needed to know how the future would pan out for a couple of the characters who for me, were extremely important to round this story up. I don’t often review a book which isn’t an ARC. Why I did this one is simply because such a brilliant read merits my thoughts. BRAVO to you Ms Kreig!

I love carbs, but there’s love-hate relationship with my ass and thighs. Mostly hate. I like a good cocktail (oh hell…who am I kidding? I love any cocktail). I’m a huge creature of habit, but I’ll tell you I’m flexible. I read every single day and if I don’t get a chance…watch the hell out. My iPad and me: BFFs. I’m direct and I make no apologies for it. I swear too much. I love alternative music and in my next life I want to be a bad-ass female rocker. I hate, hate, hate spiders, telemarketers, liver, acne, winter and loose hairs that fall down my shirt (don’t ask, it’s a thing).
I love both reading and writing stories that feature alpha males and strong, independent women who bring them to their knees. Literally to their knees. We all know women DO rule the world, after all. But shhh…let’s keep that secret just between us girls. 😉

The queen of suspense has done it again and as she’d left me hanging on a precipice in Into The Light, I couldn’t wait to get my teeth into this one. And oh boy, was it worth waiting for! An expert at weaving intricate twists and turns where the reader least expects them, the author kept me on my toes throughout and had me flipping the pages at an impossible rate. Never forthcoming about how her plots are going to pan out seriously messes with your mind too, so get ready for some shocking revelations in this read. Who I thought was going to be the heroine’s saviour, turned out to a conniving you know what! In fact, he had me totally fooled.
“Come on sweetheart, I’ll show you mine, you show me yours. We used to be good at that.”
“Stop it, your bipolarness is scaring me.”
In all its complexity, there were a few moments when I was a tad confused but saying this, it’s exactly what I look for in a good read. I also found Away From The Dark a little difficult to review as I had no wish to spoil it for the future reader. However, what I can mention without letting on are my feelings for the protagonists and how they reacted in the worst possible scenarios. Jacob’s persona becomes even stronger. I understood him better and couldn’t blame him for the atrocious situation Sara was unwillingly thrown into. Nope, my deluge of recriminations was exclusively for someone whom I’d trusted in the first book.
“Do you remember me telling you how the first time I ever saw you I know you were mine?”
Despite the fact that Jacob’s stance towards Sara upset me no end, it was necessary in the eyes of others if the cat wasn’t going to be let out of the bag. I couldn’t wait for the truth to be revealed and for Sara to give Jacob a piece of her mind.
“Vulgarity and disobedience are only two transgressions. I’ve heard you use two vulgarities in the last thirty seconds. As always, the severity of your correction is at my discretion.”
Sara recuperates her real self by a fluke. However, I suspected that her deeply embedded acuity had a lot to do with it. That being said, what she did was done for the love of her husband well-knowing she’d overstepped the mark. It took me a while to realise why her action was so closely connected to her recovery, but I’m so glad she’d made this decision. The dire straits she and Jacob find themselves in will mean playing a theatrical part if they’re going to survive. With the help and guidance of her Jacob who plainly adores her, they fight back. Yet I couldn’t stop questioning some of the methods used since what happens does have its consequences. She’s still dreadfully inquisitive; the confidence she’d lost comes flowing back but like me, there were times both of us couldn’t get our heads around what was actually taking place. It’s a case of you’ve got to read it to believe it! Then there’s one hell of a lot of guilt involved and even more forgiveness which in turn, gives the story a realistic depth.
“I’m so fucking sorry I tried to make it the best I could for you.”
“Maybe that’s all you need to push you over the edge into making the right decision.”
I yearned for the outcome with an impatience that nearly got the better of me, and prayed that Jacob and Sara were going to be able to get ‘away from the dark’ unscathed. I didn’t doubt Jacob’s cunning tactics for one minute. His staying power never wavered and he went to great lengths to protect Sara when everything seemed to be drowned in a sea of complications.
“I had an overwhelming desire to protect her from the darkness that lurked with The Light.”
The author most definitely got me out of my comfort zone with her detailed account of Jacob and Sara’s struggles. Her knack for sowing the seed of doubt is as always, quite brilliant, and her character development is as per usual, impeccable. The storyline is solid, action-packed and the nail-biting moments made for an unputdownable read. So why four stars? The conclusion didn’t have the closure I was hoping for regarding two of the characters. Seeing that this book is a duet, my frustration to know more about them abounded. Maybe it’s me and I’ll eat my words if I have to but I do think some questions went unanswered. In my opinion, there is an opening for another suspenseful tale. Bravo Ms Romig for another enthralling offering!
