An Exaltation of Larks, the first book Suanne Laqueur’s bestselling Venery Series is on sale for only $2.99 through 11th January!

September 11, 1973: Eleven-year-old Alejandro Penda watches from his apartment window as Santiago, Chile falls to a military coup, destroying his family and his childhood. Arriving alone in America, he’s taken in by the Larks: a prominent family in the town of Guelisten. Though burdened by unresolved grief for his disappeared parents, he becomes fiercely loyal to the Larks, eventually marrying one of their daughters, Valerie.

September 11, 2001: Javier Landes watches from his apartment window as New York City falls to terrorism. As one of Manhattan’s top-paid male escorts, this professional lover has never lacked for company and is loyal only to himself. But in the wake of 9/11, Jav is named guardian for an orphaned nephew in Guelisten and must open his carefully-guarded heart to pain he’s long suppressed.

Alex, Valerie and Jav meet first in their twenties, with a sudden attraction each finds strange and compelling. When they meet again in their forties, they discover not only is their bond still strong, but their life experiences are strangely similar. All have been shaped by separate 9/11’s, and their unfinished business from the past will change everything they know about love, loyalty and friendship.

“Life has rules. You cannot come in the middle of the night and take what we agreed isn’t yours.”

Across three decades and two continents, Suanne Laqueur’s fifth novel explores the unpredictability of sexual attraction, how family ties are forged, torn and mended, and how love’s downfall can turn to exaltation.

Review by Sharon Thérèse at KFF

I was dying to put pen to paper even before I’d finished reading this book and that just goes to show you how much I loved it. So many thoughts were spinning in my mind, so many feelings out of control, I can’t begin to tell you the effect it had on me or how the Lark’s story cries out to be read. Despite the length and timespan, every page turned and every word read was an ‘exaltation’.  It doesn’t make for heavy reading, either; on the contrary. . . it is a brilliant piece of literature. The author’s polished prose is as such that I had to stop reading many passages, sit back and reflect on them before carrying on. And although her storyline is beyond original, what captured my attention was the detailed account of her characters’ qualities, fears and achievements.

An Exaltation of Larks hit me hard from the word go and kept me on tenterhooks throughout. I felt a strong family oneness about them as they stick together through thick and thin. Life’s obstacles strengthen them, but also show their weaknesses. They live passionately and love completely in a tale of sufferance and exuberance. Unravelling over the course of several generations, I quickly became emotionally invested in the relationship between three beautiful people.

“Second chances are given or made.”

Alejandro’s ability to cope with the aftermath of a childhood experience is when he is accepted with open arms into the safe haven of a loving family. But deep down, his grief keeps rearing up its ugly head. He needs help and has it, but at times in all his desperation, it’s not enough. Javier’s story is no less tragic and just as heart-breaking. The hand of fate plays an unfair game of betrayal. Wrongfully judged at an age when boys aren’t yet men, the price he pays is shockingly harsh. Pushed to breaking point, if he’s going to survive, he’ll have to find ways to build up his inner-strength. And this folk, is just the beginning!

“Being with you feels like home.”

“I shouldn’t have to be your home.”

I truly believe destiny’s road is marked out for each and every one of us. In an unexaggerated tone, this is exactly what happens when these two men’s lives uncannily coincide. Their traits are disturbingly similar on some levels; on others, divergent. Without taking into consideration their backgrounds which will influence them later on in life, a friendship blossoms into something special. It was what they needed, treasured and respected. Warming my heart, they made me smile, laugh out loud, cry and brought out such raw emotions in me that I honestly say I was mentally visualising their ups and downs. I didn’t think it were ever possible for an author to paint a picture of their protagonists’ personalities so vividly, but Ms Laqueur did it to perfection!

“Many people like being alone, but nobody likes being lonely. I became lonely. . .”

Valerie! Goodness me, apart from leaving me totally speechless; in contrast, her unforgettable character had me praising her in this read’s entirety. She is the backbone of this story, holds tightly on the family reins and keeps the banter flowing in such a natural manner that I couldn’t help but adore her. Did I agree with her. . . hmm, her honesty is to be tested but all said and done, the best of us make mistakes, and I think hers was more than justified as her only wish was to maintain the status quo. Her open-mindedness and selfless protectiveness is refreshing. The love she has for her kinsfolk, undeniably strong. In fact, if anyone’s going to be able to calm troubled waters regardless of being between a rock and a hard place, it is she.

“You don’t have to be strong anymore.”

How Alex, Jav and Val’s story panned out surprised me. I have to confess that I wanted it to take a path which was not to be. However, after much contemplation, the place they found on a soul-stirring level was to my mind of thinking, indisputably correct when there was so much at stake. The secondary character development is fan-freakin’-tastic! I really connected to Valerie’s quirky sister, Trelawney and the two teenagers, Deane and Ari. . . lovely guys whose growing up struggles were really well-described. Here, Valerie and Alex and Jav’s empathy was crucial. Although house rules weren’t negotiable, their handling of certain issues were always carefully dealt with.

“These are the rules, kid. And they suck sometimes but they keep you safe and they keep the world in order.”

What sold me too was the tense dialogue in angst-ridden scenes that were actually, outnumbered by touching ones. Also, passages and sentences in italic caused a lump in my throat and had me grabbing for whatever happened to be at hand to dry my eyes. I have to mention to those of you who speak Spanish to try and ignore the few translation errors I came across. The verb conjugations of ‘ser / estar — ‘to be’, is one example. Nevertheless, these slip-ups shouldn’t hinder your reading enjoyment. It didn’t mine.

Well, what can I say to the author that I haven’t said already? Your words are splendiferous, your book, magnificent. One that shall never be forgotten, one to be savoured again and again and meriting at the very least, five stars. Bravo Ms Laqueur!

My name is Hunter O’Shea and I have a confession to make…I’ve met a girl who consumes me. I know that makes me sound completely whipped, but Mary “Lamb” Mitts has the power to bring me to my knees…it’s just too bad she hates my guts. But that’s okay, because I hate hers, too. The fiery redhead stirs something in me that I can’t explain.

This temporary insanity could be due to the fact my best friend, who used to be a bigger player than me, is getting married. That must be it. I’m caught up in an Oprah moment.

The only solution is to get back in the game and forget she exists. That theory is great—too bad I don’t want anyone else.

I’m so screwed.

Amazon Paperback

iBooks | Nook | Kobo

Something is happening and I have no idea what. Mary’s eyes drop to my lips before she uneasily licks hers. Her flushed cheeks, dilated pupils, and heavy breathing all point to one thing—but that’s not possible. This woman hates me, all delicious, lithe five-foot-four of her wants me dead.

So why is she not slapping my cheeks and calling me a dirty manwhore when I inch closer to her lips? And why am I not slamming on the brakes because I don’t kiss—ever, but that rule seems to be obsolete when the supplest pair of lips are a hairs breadth away?

I’m rolling in her perfume. Slathering it all over my body and inhaling it like a new drug. She is all goddess, and if I don’t touch her, I’m going to explode.

Placing my palm to her cheek, we both moan at the contact, and when she parts those lips, I’m as good as gone. “Hunter, wh-what are you doing?”

My name has never sounded sweeter. “Shortcake, I don’t know…you tell me.” The ball is in her court. I’m liquefying and my brain turned to mush about fifteen minutes ago, so I’m in no state to be the one calling the shots.

“I…I…” she fumbles, never breaking eye contact.

“You what?” I ask, tugging at the lobe of her ear, before tracing my pointer down her throat. Her pulse is hammering, a sure sign she’s about to either surrender, or flee.

“I…oh god,” she whimpers, biting her lip when I work my finger back up and paint over her jawline in a slow sweep.

“You have three seconds…three seconds to stop me before I part those lips with my tongue, and I won’t be gentle about it.”

TEASERS ~ Tapping That Asset by London Hale

Undressed woman sitting on a couch kissing with handsome man in black suit

Beer and business have never been so sexy!
Tapping That Asset by London Hale will be #ONTAP November 2!!!

She only wanted one night

Being on the road all the time because of the family business makes for a lot of lonely nights. So when handsome, charming AJ Phelps finds me in the hotel bar, I’m ready for more than casual conversation. After an amazing night, my hope to continue a brief affair with the town charmer is derailed when I come face to face with him the following day. This time, he’s not just handsome, charming AJ. He’s all business…and the owner of the brewery my brother is dead set on ruining. All may be fair in love and war, but there’s nothing as cut throat as beer and business.

He wants it all

As an ex-pro baseball player turned business owner, I have it all. Or I thought I did until Kennedy Rochester crossed my path. A one night stand with a woman as hot, intelligent, and feisty as that? No brainer. At least not until the following morning when she steps into my brewery and tells me in no uncertain terms her family business is there to put me out of mine. I should loathe her for threatening my livelihood, but I don’t. I can’t. Not when all I think about when I look at her is our single, toe-curling night together. Not when I’d give nearly anything for just one more.

Why I hadn’t discovered Scott up until now is a question I can’t possibly answer. Perhaps too much reading to catch up on with one’s never ending TBR list… But when I one-clicked on Forever Right Now, I knew straightaway that this one was going to be right up my alley. I don’t want dark issues or books that upset me; what I look for is pure and utter entertainment and the added angst which this author gave me in just the right places, was exactly what I needed. And to say I was impressed by her expressive writing would be putting it mildly. Scott has managed to develop a plot that hits home; that’s easily related to in the times we live in. Well-thought-out and impeccable character development stands out, too. And this folks, is exactly what I look for in a five star read. The cover I appreciated more and more as I got to know Darlene Montgomery. Her quandaries, her thoughts for the future, whether she’ll be able to find what she is looking for… or not, is perfectly portrayed in an image of thoughtfulness, of light and future.

I have to say that Darlene’s secret was revealed earlier than I expected it to. Understandably, it is well-kept from someone who she begins to get to know. More than one opportunity arises, but her not being forthcoming was firstly because she has to comes to terms with her past before getting involved in any kind of relationship and secondly, her concern about how it’s going to be received. Foremost on her mind was taking time out, finding herself and her way in new surroundings seemed to me to be a natural step in the right direction. And of course, by doing so I have to commend. He, Sawyer Haas, wasn’t on the cards though.

Sawyer. Blinkin’ heck…the bomb was dropped in the epilogue! No-one should have to go through what he did at such a crucial point in their lives. It all appeared to be so unfair; however, he opens his heart under the harshest of circumstances in such a way that this reader had to make a sudden dash for her man-sized hanky. Sawyer is an inspiration for all young people who could find themselves in a similar position. Without any social life except for his best mates, Sawyer does the best he can and oh boy, this gorgeous lad with a heart of gold does a damn good job regardless of the constant pressure he’s getting from all angles. I really did feel sorry for him and even wondered if he’d be able to find a solution, keep what he cherished most, what gave him such joy and meaning.

Talk about neighbourly love isn’t in it! If Darlene confuses Sawyer, she’s even more confused by her feelings for him. But if anyone can grab the bull by its horns, it is her. An admirable, chatty and loving lass, she just happens to be there when he needs a helping hand and here is where the story picks up at a really fast pace. Consequently, I couldn’t put the book down and did an all-nighter! The past tense narrative from dual-perspectives couldn’t have been better, the secondary character development, spot on. The twist floored me…the author’s research into family law was perfect seeing as I had no idea how cases such as this one work in the U.S. Now then, I didn’t read the blurb since this book was recommended to me and I would suggest you do the same. That being said, I did read it after finishing the book and think that it could spoil the read a tad if you do. I love the mystery behind any story and believe you me, I wasn’t in the slightest bit let down in this one. Bravo Ms Scott!

This read floored me! Expressing my thoughts regarding Laqueur’s latest book not only became a personal dilemma…how I’d be able to string my humble words together and write a meaningful review for a book worthy of six stars without giving anything away, but also the lasting effect it had on me. The author’s thought-provoking and insightful narrative left me exhausted, elated and had me sobbing into the early hours. Dawn broke, I still read on. More pages were turned throughout the day and never once did it cross my mind to put it down. Laqueur made me suffer beyond any sufferance I’d ever had to endure; in return, my expletives morphed into praise for an author who’d literally cracked it, who’d got the message home, who’d developed the most beautiful of characters, leaving me in awe of them thanks to her profoundly good storytelling.

Two parallel stories meld together in a family saga of grit and courage. It made me think about where it would lead to, how they’d be able to find closure, move on without coming out unscathed. I also kept asking myself if A Charm of Finches could be read as a standalone. I’m absolutely sure the author’s intention is for An Exaltation of Larks to be read first; however, seeing as she’d bent over backwards to include every minuscule detail, I’d say it might be worth giving it a try. Then again, you’d most certainly be missing out on the true essence of two family’s trials, tribulations and triumphs in all their gloriousness.

Before putting pen to paper, my other concern was rereading it. I knew I had to, I also knew I needed someone to hold my hand seeing as it had had such an emotional impact on me. Who better person to join me on this journey of love, heartbreak and healing was my book buddy. A curious lass, she threw a barrage of questions at me which of course, I couldn’t possibly answer. But to her delight and mine, we meet up with Javier Landes again. An unforgettable character, Javier excelled in what he’d been doing, but wants out. Overcoming a harsh and unfair past, losing the two loves of his life in one way or another, all I wanted was for him to find someone deserving of his love. He already had my heart in his hand, this time his tact and honesty I revelled in. He is who he is and accepts it without further ado. So when Steffen Finch stepped into his life, it was like a breath of fresh air and I prayed they’d be able to make it work.

Now then, if I had to choose between Steff and Javi because they’re both absolutely gorgeous, I’d have a hard time. I loved their slow-burn relationship, their cautiousness, and how they dealt with trust issues head-on was a joy to read. Steff’s paper in this story is crucial and not because of his growing feelings for Javi. His public persona is that of a strong determined professional; nevertheless, his new patient will become the biggest challenge of his career. Guiding a young lad back down to earth after surviving a traumatic experience, observing him give space and understanding and affection to someone I truly thought was unfixable, tugged at my heartstrings like they’ve never been tugged at before… So as you can see, the ride you’re about to get on isn’t going to be an easy one but be assured, it’ll be like no other you’ll ever experience.

Deary me, young Geno stole the story simply because it was his to steal. There is no doubt whatsoever that it is he who dominates this story and not out of choice. No-holds-barred, Laqueur unravels a narrative tension second to none. A sequence of events so explicitly vivid made me feel as if I was living this beautiful young person’s pain. The cruel hand of fate dished out to him, or better said, by someone dear, is not only tough on him, though. Everyone concerned for Geno’s well-being suffered alongside him, their source of strength and patience decisive in his acceptance of what had happened. And of course, they had to be a special person who’d take him under his wing which in itself, could be another story!

How the author wrote some of the graphically disturbing scenes, I do not know, but I can only imagine how distressing it must have been for her. Not one of her written words is to be taken lightly; behind them, heartfelt emotions are strung together making a long story seem short. Another thing that impressed me was the detailed research she’d done regarding a couple one of the secondary character’s history and actually had me wondering if she has experience in the counselling of young people. That being said, there are moments of happiness, and the banter–wow! Told in past tense in third-person gives the reader the opportunity to delve deeply into all the characters’ thoughts; believe you me, this well-executed plot will have you reading the book from beginning to end without coming up for air! Bravo Ms Laqueur!

Title: One Shot

Series: Chances #1

Author: BJ Harvey

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: November 16, 2017

Boy meets girl, boy wins girl, boy nails girl—boy’s gone by morning.

I think for sure it must’ve been a dream because there’s no way a guy could look like that, touch me like that and be so in tune with me on every known level, and disappear, leaving me with nothing but a good story to tell my friends.

When he walks into my bar three months later, everything I thought I knew and what we’d had disappears in the blink of an eye and the blinding light of the three-carat diamond on his fiancée’s hand.

It seems what I thought was a dream is now my most complicated reality, and I’ve got absolutely no idea how to fix it – or if I even want to.

I rush out from behind the bar and through the swinging door. I’m almost at the end of the corridor when the door opens behind me and I freeze. My chest tightens, because if it’s either of the two men I think it could be, there’s no way this will end well.
He comes closer, each step like an echo matching the impending doom I feel in my gut.
“I got your message.”
“Good,” I reply, fighting every urge I have to turn toward him.
“And you were right. You do deserve better.”
“I do.”
“I hate the thought of him touching you.”
I gasp, my mouth dropping open at his admission.
“I’ve known him for thirteen years. He’s supposed to be my best man. I love him like a brother but I hate him touching you.”
Oh no he didn’t. I spin around and come face to face with Millen, his face tight, his arms crossed over his chest. “What?” I spit out.
“It’s not right. I love him like a brother and I want him happy. Just not happy with you. Especially not happy touching you.”
“How dare you?” I grind out, my jaw so rigid my face hurts.
“I hate seeing you with anyone that’s not me.”
My eyes bug out, completely dumbfounded. He’s crazy if he thinks he has any say in who I see.
“You’re a joke,” I spit out, the blood simmering in my veins now boiling over. Lifting my hand up, I poke my finger hard into his chest. “You’re the one with the problem. It’s was you who came up to me. You that lied and said you were single.” My voice threatens to break but I power through it. “You made me become the one thing I never wanted to be—the other woman. And to her. You’re such a fucking ass—”
The rest of the word gets stuck in my throat when he wraps his hand around my neck and crashes his mouth into mine. His body crushes me into the wall as he kisses the shit out of me. And—dammit—it’s a good kiss—a scorching-hot, never-to-be-the-same-again kiss.
I tear my lips free and shove him back. I step forward, and my hand darts up. With a resounding crack, I slap him across the face. I try again but before I can make contact he catches me, swings my arm behind my back, pins me in place and kisses me again. I fight him off for a second before giving in. My anger melts away as he tastes me, his tongue plundering my mouth. I grip his hair with my free hand, pulling the strands tight, his guttural groan vibrating through me, setting my entire body on fire.

“Drew, I—”
“A big group just came in and the girls are getting slammed,” he says, his jaw set tight.
I move toward him. “It’s not
He shakes his head, opening his mouth to say something, but he slices his gaze through Millen and stops on me. “I’m going, but you,” he says, pinning Millen with a cold stare, “you should get back to your fiancée. You know, the woman you should be kissing.” With that, he turns and slaps his palm against the door, swinging it open and stalking out without another word.
