Unlike most eighteen year olds, I had the weight of the world on my young shoulders. Desperate to do right by my family, my questionable choices led me to the pits of hell.

Steel bars, three meals a day and no contact with the outside world; regret consumed my every thought. Desperate to pay my penance, forgiveness and a happily ever after wasn’t the plan.

But there she was.

Warm, passionate and unexpected, Emerson Lane was the light at the end of the tunnel. She was all a man like me could want and everything I didn’t deserve.

Redemption wasn’t something I thought I would ever find. Until she found me.

Emerson Lane is a Lawyer whose field of work is legal aid namely helping paroled prisoners adjust to life outside and making sure the transition is smooth along with working with the parole officer assigned. Emerson grew up with a family tradition of lawyers who specialise in property law and that was originally the field she was supposed to follow in; however, she soon realised it wasn’t for her much to her family’s disgust who felt it wouldn’t pay the bills and wasn’t worthwhile enough. She is a strong-willed lady with a heart of gold and on a mission to help those that have fallen on the wrong side of tracks.

Jagger Michaels is a  brooding man who has spent the past twelve years in a penitentiary and finds himself up for parole although he isn’t very keen. Whatever it is that got him wound up in, jail preys a heavy burden on his shoulders. He feels so much guilt and thinks he should still be serving time. He paints himself as worthless and not in the slightest good enough to be back in society with any forgiveness for what he did all those years ago.

“Can you do one thing for me please?”
“It’s a bit early to ask for favours isn’t it?”
“Its time to call your family Jagger, get ready to go home.”

There is an instant attraction between the two protagonists but given their positions, it’s hopeless even thinking about it. The chemistry is very palpable and you get to know what each one is thinking with the story being told in dual point of view. Jagger has a brother called Hendrix and he is very different, but an interesting character and the dynamics of their relationship was refreshing considering they had spent so many years apart. Overall, the side characters were a great attribute to the story and while its mainly centred around the two main counterparts, the development and individuality kept me fully entertained. Emerson has a colleague called Taylor and she was very feisty and funny.  I should also mention two other additional characters called Dakota and Sasha although I don’t want to give away their connection to the story just be assured they were interesting. Dakota was a real sweetheart and I warmed to her instantly. Joe, Emerson and Taylor’s colleague, I didn’t like him one bit. I had a bad feeling about him.

There is a total swoon worthy moment and my favourite line: I kiss her as if its my first kiss. I kiss her knowing its our last.

“So, why are we walking away from one another?”
“It’s not our time.”
“Maybe in the next life?”
“You wont be able to keep me away.”

The moment I turned the cover to the prologue the words reeled me in. I wanted to know more and why. The author very cleverly makes you think you know what’s going to happen only to put a completely different spin on it. I hung onto every word and felt the pain of the transgressions of the male protagonist and the passion. There is every emotion going from sadness to laughter. I love the author’s storytelling and the development of plot and characters. I have had to go in for a re-read as I couldn’t get this masterpiece off my mind. You know it’s a great book when you think about it long after the epilogue. Its already paved the way for Hendrix story and I look forward to it especially if we get a glimpse of all that played a part in Reclaim. Marley valentine is a great addition to the book world with her talented penmanship. I mustn’t forget to mention the Reclaim playlist on Spotify that I have had on constant play since I have read the book. The tracks are cleverly chosen to compliment the story. Bravo and congratulations Ms Valentine. A worthy five stars.

Man, what a read this one was. I so hoped after finishing ‘He Loves Me…Knot’ Beckett would get his own book and sure enough he got his book and then some. Ivy Hayes was his equal in every sense of the word.

‘It’s at this moment it falls together for me. Her sacrifice of comfort for me, for my mother’s memory, means more than Ivy could possibly imagine.’

I adored the use of the ‘Word of the Day app’ and the fun that ensued because of this. Ivy’s closest friend Darcy held such a presence on the page that I fell in love with her almost instantly. I dare not forget to mention Leif, he has the ability to make me vanish, digitally speaking, that is. And if that isn’t enough fun factor on the page; we finally are introduced to Beckett’s elusive brother, Brant makes an appearance on page and he is wonderful, caring and so very funny.

The title of this book will make sense to the reader once they get started on this wild ride of a book. I often wondered prior to getting Ditched into my grubby little hands what the title meant and I loved every minute of it once I realised what it meant, for not only Ivy but for the rest of the characters of this little gem.

‘Then he breaks into a wide, toothy grin and a tiny voice inside of me screams. He’s a good guy. Ivy. You really will hurt him.’

The way that Ivy and Beckett meet is so very succinct for this author and rings very true towards the characters involved. All I will say is that who causes it has always devotedly been in the corner of Beckett.

“Oh my gosh, I love your shirt!”
“I’m sorry to startle you. My best friend would absolutely love that shirt,”. “You wouldn’t happen to be single, would you?”

Emma Jane and Knox are very key players in this book, and this reviewer wouldn’t have it any other way. Emma Jane especially is important to Beckett, and vice versa. They were there for each other through thick and thin and it only makes sense that she would be such a large presence on page.

The ups and downs in this book are examples of extremes, this author sure does love to torture her characters, and the sadist in me adored every minute. She has the genius of being able to spin a tale in any way, shape, or form and it never not works. There is zero detraction from the story whilst in progress. And there is not a single word or paragraph of useless text. The romance is slow burning and extremely gentle. Ivy comes from a hard background and is almost like a feral cat at the beginning. Beckett is the kind of man not afraid to follow through or use his softer side. He’s the kind of man that many women would fall to their knees for.

‘This–here with you–I feel like I’m baring more than my skin. Like he sees more than simply a naked woman standing before him.’

Ultimately, I went into this book head over heels for both Emma Jane and Knox, I didn’t think for a second that Beckett or Ivy could change how I felt about them. I’ll freely admit to anyone who asks, my mind was changed within the first ten percent of the book. Beckett and Ivy have jumped ahead in my affection. This, like ‘He Love Me…Knot’ is not an easy read; however, it is so worth the time and effort. I laughed, and I cried with these characters and to me they feel more real than most bok characters I have had the pleasure of being introduced to. Thank you Ms. Boldt, and congratulations on another scintillatingly, awesome read.

JACOB’S LADDER: ELI by Katie Ashley

One wouldn’t expect a sexy-as-sin rocker like Eli Renard to spend time with a woman just as a friend, but that’s exactly what Emersyn Wallace is to him. Just a friend. Even though she’s matured into a beauty, Eli still doesn’t remotely see his childhood pal as a sex-object. When tragedy brings her back into his world, Eli moves mountains to help Emersyn get back onto her feet by finding her a job as a backup singer for Jacob’s Ladder. At first, Eli is thrilled that Emerysn is along on tour, and he sets out to do his best to help her forget her sorrow through a range of crazy friend dates. But after spending so much time with her in such close quarters, Eli finds his feelings beginning to shift. He no longer sees Emersyn as the once awkward young girl he played some of his first songs with. Soon it’s not only his body that reacts to her, but it’s also his heart. He’s about to learn what a dangerous game it is to dry a widow’s tears.

After losing her husband and singing partner in a tragic accident, Emersyn Wallace spent the last eight months drowning in a sea of grief. With the bills piling up and her family and friends concerned about her emotional welfare, she reluctantly agrees to join the Jacob’s Ladder’s tour. While recapturing her lost love of singing and performing, she finds both comfort and healing in Eli’s gregarious personality and outrageous sense of humor. But as the anniversary of her husband’s death approaches, she finds herself in turmoil over her new amorous feelings for Eli.

Can Eli and Emersyn find the perfect melody to transition from friends to lovers, or will their relationship end out of tune?

I have to start by saying that I truly love this series. I read Gabe’s story and didn’t think I could love anyone as much as I did Gabe and Rae; man, was I wrong. Emersyn and Eli stole my heart and I adored them both so much. I sat down to read this book mid evening and before I knew it I had reached 60% and just couldn’t put it down.

I’m a huge fan of the covers. Each one speaks so much about the main characters starring in the book. The white backgrounds and the concert photos at the bottom of the cover create a bright and invigorating feeling. The book starts off in the past giving the reader a wonderful insight into how Emersyn (or Sonny as Eli calls her) and Eli met and became friends. Eli is the kind of friend anybody would give anything to have. When Emersyn experiences a heart rending experience, Eli is there for her night and day.

Eli is such a giving human being, he would much rather treat his family and friends then spend his money on himself. The relationship between Eli and Emersyn shifts so slowly that neither is aware of it until they’re at the point of no return.

‘I’m pretty sure you don’t kiss your best friend like that, like was it as good for you as it was for me?’

The battle they both war with themselves is life altering. Do they risk their friendship to move their relationship to a new level or do they stay just as they are?

‘Of course, it made sense. Life wasn’t a continuous cookie-cutter moment. It was a mixture of both beauty and pain. Sometimes you had to go through the darkest times to appreciate the blessing of light in your life.’

This review could go on forever but I won’t give away a single moment of one of the best friends to lover romances I have read in quite some time. This book can be read as a standalone, but I beg you, please read Gabe’s book first, you will not regret it for one second.

Years after her husband’s tragic death, years of pain and sorrow and wishing for the life she’ll never get back, Poppy decides to finish Jamie’s birthday list. She’ll do the things he wanted to most. Because maybe, just maybe, if she can complete his list, she can start to live again.

Poppy expects going through the birthday list will be hard. She expects it to hurt. But what she doesn’t expect is Cole. Could the man who delivered the news of her husband’s death and shattered her heart be the one to help her put it back together again?

Turning to the door, I smiled, ready to greet my late-evening customer, but faltered as the door closed behind him.

Cole Goodman was walking my way.

My belly dipped as I took him in. His aviator sunglasses were perched on top of his chocolate-brown hair. A black polo stretched across his broad shoulders and pulled tight across his muscled arms. His pale-blue jeans molded to his Herculean thighs before draping down to his black, square-toed boots. The leather belt on Cole’s trim waist held both a shining badge and a holstered gun.

Cole smiled and locked his light-green eyes on mine as he crossed the room.

His straight, white teeth made my breath hitch—something that had happened last night more times than I wanted to admit.

Molly, who had turned around from her seat to greet our customer, spun around so her back was to Cole. Her cheeks flushed as she whispered, “Wow.”

Wow was right.

Cole Goodman was—simply put—gorgeous.

He could give a woman a speeding ticket and get a thank-you in return. He inspired women to attempt push-ups in a karate class just for the chance to watch him sweat through his gi. Cole made grown women blush like teenagers and giggle in corners, like those girls at the dojo last night.

I’m so pleased a book buddy of mine called my attention to this full-length standalone, and being a first-timer to Perry’s works made me even more excited. Not only did it quickly become apparent that The Birthday List was my kind of read, but also what I needed to get myself out of the book slump I’d been in for a while. Ooh my, the prologue! My heart twisted and devastated, I read on. I found myself getting lost in the author’s words, her characters, and the really well-thought-out storyline so easily, I couldn’t put it down. Put two and two together and you’ll probably come up with the right answer regarding the title and the cover, is isn’t it simply stunning? Depicting the female protagonist’s name, Poppy, it’s certainly a refreshing change from what we’ve been seeing of late.

As long or short as it may be, most of us have made a mental list of things we’d like to do if we can. Someone very dear to Poppy had one, they laughed and joked about it and in the split of a second, everything changed. But here is the thing. What I really and truly liked was the structure of each chapter. Some are told from Poppy’s point of view, others by Cole. But what stands out in each and every one of them has a wish from the list.

“Please think about stopping this list thing. I hate that it makes you cry.”

“I have to,” “I have to do this. Even if it takes me years.”

You can’t get more original than a restaurant where the food’s not served on a plate, now can you? I’ll keep you guessing about how Poppy presented her mouthwatering recipes! Actually, I was hoping for a couple of them to appear in the story but more important, the life-changing decision she’d make would help her become mentally and emotionally stronger. Making new memories meant she’d do some crazy things and what a joy it was reading all about them.

‘I didn’t have a list of things I wanted to do in my life. I had a wall of memories of the things I’d already done.’

How Cole Goodman met Poppy was tragic. Now he’s back in her life and I could see the wheels turning in their heads. I felt as if I’d grabbed the best seat in the cinema and didn’t even need popcorn to relish watching their friendship grow. Yes guys, it’s slow burn romance not difficult to comprehend under the circumstances. I can’t even begin to imagine how hard it must have been for Poppy to fight her attraction towards Cole. Letting go of an all-consuming guilt, trying to cope with everyday life wasn’t easy, but she knew she had to move on.

‘Guilt. Guilt was a heavy beast. It settled like a dead weight in my chest.’

Cole adores her. Down to earth, he’s the perfect guy to guide Poppy back into the land of the living. His pursuit of her was by no means overbearing and brought a smile to my face. There’s one scenario that had me grinning from ear to ear and although Cole didn’t find it as amusing as I did, him telling her off and then trying to make things right showed me he was there for her. Him taking control when he thought necessary was done with sensitivity and yes guys, it definitely looks like his gorgeousness is swooning material, doesn’t it? Family and friends play a huge part in their story which I really appreciated. And then there’s a couple of characters who will have you laughing out loud. Moments of angst, there are; however, quite low-key. When emotionally-charged issues arise, they are dealt with sensibly, with trust and respect.

“The rest of your life is still unwritten.”

One thing I’d like to mention are the inner-thoughts. Obviously, there’s less banter; nonetheless, when the dialogue does start flowing, it’s really good, more often than not light-hearted, yet many times you’ll be drying your eyes. Fortunately, I went in blind and highly recommend doing the same. After finishing the book, I read the synopsis and have to say it did feel as if a little too much had been given away. Despite this detail, The Birthday List is without a doubt for lovers of heartwarming romances who enjoy all the feels. Ooh, Molly and Finn’s story. Now that would be a real treat! Bravo Perry!

Russ and Kylie refused to let her help with cleanup. She had badgers to deal with, after all. Felicity thanked them and headed home along the river, content with her life—but wishing she’d find Gabe sitting on her deck or down at their swimming hole. Even without Russ’s take on Nadia, Felicity felt she and Gabe had unfinished business. Plus, she thought, she just wanted to see him, talk to him, laugh with him.

She groaned, blaming the hot, hazy early summer afternoon for her emotions.

There was no Gabe, of course, when she arrived back at her house, just tiny black ants that had discovered a gooey crumb on her kitchen floor.

She threw her hands on her hips. “How’d you guys get here so fast?”

She dealt with the ant mess, welcoming the sense of normalcy that came with it. Ants weren’t unusual this time of year.

Dealing with a potential stalker was unusual.

Felicity took her laptop out to a shaded spot on the deck and checked her messages. No texts, emails or voice mails from anyone, never mind Nadia Ainsworth.

As she worked, Felicity noticed dark clouds gathering to the west, adding a gray cast to the river. The air was still, oppressively hot and humid. She welcomed the cold front that the dark clouds signaled was moving in, but she’d happily skinny-dip in an isolated spot in the river right now. Probably not a good idea to be swimming when lightning struck.

She went inside and sat in front of a fan in the living room. It was one of those rare days when she wished Mark had installed air-conditioning.

A text came through. She glanced at her screen. “Gabe,” she whispered as she read it.

Made it to Boston. Thanks again for everything. What are you up to?

She typed her answer: Resisting our swimming hole.

Not good to swim alone.

Who says I’m alone?

But you are.

She smiled, surprised she wasn’t annoyed. I am. Storm’s coming. No swimming for me. Working. You?

Always working. TTYL.

Should she bring up Nadia? Felicity shook her head, but she’d known she wouldn’t before she’d posed the question to herself. She typed a quick response: Talk soon.

Two minutes later, Gabe sent her a short video of bulldog puppies, a throwback to their pre-fight friendship. She watched the video twice, smiling even as she warned herself not to get sucked in by Gabriel Flanagan. He liked to have things his way, and she wasn’t going to twist herself into knots to please him. That didn’t mean she knew what they were to each other after the past few days, but if she wanted a man in her life, Gabe was a distraction if not an outright impediment—not because she couldn’t have male friends but because of their history, because they’d kissed at the swimming hole.

Because they weren’t just friends and maybe never had been.

If he were here, what would they be doing now, with a storm moving in on a hot, sweaty day?

And don’t miss the first standalone titles in the Swift River Valley series!

“Mixing humor, nostalgia, a dose of regret, plus just enough drama to keep things interesting, Neggers’ eighth Swift River Valley novel is a potent friends to lovers story.” ~RT Book Reviews

Didn’t stop me the second time either. Only made me want a third.
My lifestyle suits the savage I am, and she doesn’t.
But Temperance Ransom is my newest addiction, and I’m nowhere near ready to quit her yet.
I’ll have her my way, even if it means dragging her into the darkness.

That feeling you get when you’ve only read a few lines and you know putting the book down isn’t going to be an option. That doing an all-nighter is on cards and you couldn’t give a damn as you’re simply wallowing in it and if you’re not jumping up and down, it’s simply because you don’t want to embarrass yourself! March’s writing has this effect on me. I have to admit that I haven’t read all her books; nonetheless, this one felt different from the ones I’ve read so far. Why, you may ask! Well ladies, make sure you’re sitting comfortably ‘cause I’m about to explain why!

The adjective ‘hot’ comes up short. Swelteringly impassioned and ardently intense are definitely more fitting! Now then, if any of you are familiar with my reviews, you’ll know my main interest lies in the plot, the setting and the character development. I’m well aware that amorous scenarios give an added spice to any read…a bite if you like. However, other details require our distraction. Here’s the huge plus which swung me. Not only is the storyline above the rest, what bowled me over was how the author’s entwined so much intrigue into the first of what I can only imagine to be a nail-biting series with so much steaminess. Seriously, it is steamy! Obviously I wouldn’t dream of telling you how I felt after turning the last page. The ending ladies, is for you to discover.

The tension which starts to build up in the first two chapters simply gets better and better as you read on. And the cameo appearances from The Anti-Heroes Collection had me jumping for joy, figuratively speaking of course. But who stole the show, who I’d already met was Temperance. I’d like to point out that the author has written the book in such a way that it is not necessary to have read the previous series. Temperance…oh my, what a marvellous character. Responsible, sharp and always on the ball, she’s been given the opportunity to run ‘the business’ while her boss is having time out with her better half. Showing her worth, making friends, feeling comfortable with herself and confronting her past, was what she wanted to achieve. Hmm…never in a million years could she have imagined what was to come though.

The man! Dark and so damn beguiling regardless of his…how can I put it without letting on, veil of mystery, intrigued her. Or better said, whet her sexual appetite. Perhaps too much for her own good, but who knows how she really feels comes from the most unexpected source and I do hope you love this character as much as I did! However, this inopportune taste of danger rung sweet. I asked myself where such an attraction would lead to. I also asked myself how she’d conjured up such fearlessness to do what she did. Did Temperance bite off more than she could chew? And if so, to what extent would she pay the consequences? Every step he or she took, every move they made, every allegedly calculated thought could unknowingly throw both of them out of kilter. It’s an addictive erotic relationship neither can stay away from. It’s dark, thrilling and fast paced and I blinkin’ revelled in it!

I’m dying for the author to put me out of my misery and answer my questions. I can’t say much more ladies…and gents ‘cause why not, you guys would probably love it—without spoiling it for you. Now that would be a crying shame, wouldn’t it?

So, how on earth can I sum up this read when there are two books to complete The Anti-Heroes Collection? What I can say is March’s latest release goes above and beyond. Her creative writing enraptured me; titillated and teased, tested my patience and pushed me further than I thought possible. And get this, I still want more! I have no doubt whatsoever that Iron Prince: Book Two, is going to blow my socks off! Bravo March!

“That you, Temperance?”
My gaze searches the darkness, interrupted only by the Chinese lanterns and fairy lights hanging from the trees, until it lands on the red dragon emblazoned on the back of a black silk kimono, topped by a fluffy white head of hair.
Shit. My landlady.
“I’m so sorry to disturb you, Harriet. I’ll just—”
She spins around, spry for her advanced age. “Oh, girl, you’ve got sex hair. At least that makes one of us.”
I squeeze my eyes shut in humiliation. “I . . . uh . . . got—”
“Done up right by a real man, I’d say. About damn time, girl. I was starting to think you were a lost cause of all work and no play. Almost wondered if I’d have to find a new tenant to get some entertainment around here.”
I blink twice as she shuffles toward me, fluffy pink marabou slippers on her feet. “You were going to kick me out because I work too much?”
I knew my landlady was a little nutty, but I didn’t realize she was downright crazy.
“It would’ve been a last resort. I was going to send you a male stripper first. Girl, you need some fun in your life, and you do nothing but go between here and work. Boring as hell.”
Her point is finally sinking in, but part of me is still in shock. “I’m boring?”
“Of course you are. I swear, you go out of your way to stay that way too. But not tonight. Tonight, you look like you got dicked down by a real man.” She takes a seat at the outdoor patio table and reaches for a bottle of wine. “Here’s a glass. Now, sit down and consider part of your rent spilling the juicy details.”
Dumbstruck, I close the distance between us and take a seat at the table. “It’s nothing. I swear.”
“Girl, you’re practically walking bowlegged. I’ve been around the block plenty of times. You won’t shock me.”
I reach for the glass of wine and take a long drink. Good Lord, I needed this.
“I shouldn’t even be admitting what I did tonight.”
Harriet’s aged eyes practically light up as she grins. “Those are the best stories. Come now, I’ll take it to the grave.”
I squeeze my eyes shut. “I think I accidentally went to a sex club.”
Harriet’s wineglass clinks the metal of the table. “I knew this was going to be good. How do you accidentally go to a sex club?”
I tell her about the note that came to the office, and rushing to meet the appointment, assuming I was there to sell whiskey . . . and end with the part about running from the room.
Harriet claps with childlike excitement. “There’s hope for you yet, Temperance. When are you going back?”
I’m stunned at her reaction. I didn’t exactly expect her to judge, but I sure didn’t think she’d cheer me on.
“Never. I can’t. That’s not me. I’m not . . .”
“Interesting? Sexually adventurous? Up to be manhandled regularly by a real man?”
“I don’t even know his name!”
Harriet waves off my concern. “If I had a nickel for every man whose name I didn’t know, I’d be even richer than I am now. You can’t take life so seriously. You’ll never make it out alive. Now, you go upstairs, take the rest of this bottle of wine, and get tipsy enough to forget all the shouldn’ts and can’ts. If you need me to do some stalking to find this guy, just let me know. I have connections.”
