This is the first book I’ve read from the author. A different kind of BDSM romance set in Paris, Provence and Avignon. The three main characters in this story are January, Etienne and Nigel. Not quite a love triangle although it does involve three people but not at the same time. Three complex characters and written in three parts.
January is in her mid thirties, she was born and raised in Kansas and when she was old enough to leave town she did. She made a name for herself, albeit not in a good way but her BDSM lifestyle alienated her from her family. She was involved in a scandal which almost derailed her career but she recovered well and never looked back.
Etienne is her French lover of five years, a rock star and a lot older than January. His reluctance to commit to a permanent relationship drives a wedge between them and forces her to re-evaluate her priorities in life. He might be the perfect Dom for her but she feels he isn’t capable of giving her the happy ever after she wants.
When January took a step back from Etienne, her best friend Xavier, a famous fashion designer, brought her to Provence to cheer her up. There she meets Nigel, an Englishman much younger than her. There was mutual attraction between the two and it seems like he is also a willing apprentice to her kinky lifestyle. Is Nigel just a rebound for January or is he The One? Will she give him a chance?
Although the theme of this book is BDSM, there are a lot of factors that made this story very interesting. The author successfully interlaces a quirky lifestyle in the picturesque regions of Provence and Paris and added colourful characters into the mix. Nigel is the perfect book boyfriend and makes you root for him right from the start. Etienne is such a douche bag that one wonders why January wasted five years of her life with a selfish rock star. This book is divided into three parts: the first was when January was with Etienne, the second part was when she met Nigel and the last part was when she decided to take a break from both, weigh her options and to reconnect with her family in Kansas. This book is like a travelogue of France sprinkled with BDSM erotica and lots of sex toys I have never even heard of. Some role play scenarios in this book made my inner unicorn cringe and I must have rolled my eyes too much it made me dizzy but hey, whatever floats your boat, right? A light erotica romance one will enjoy reading.
