That’s what he said when he discovered that, with five months of college left, I was cut off. Young, wickedly handsome, and politically incorrect, he was unlike any man I ever met. And his proposition to cover my tuition in exchange for a semester of “anything goes” was offensive and thrilling.

If you’re wondering if I told him off—if the night ended with me slapping that delicious smirk right off his face—that didn’t happen.

Instead, I decided to be practical.

My name is Eleanor Courtney, and I’m the first to admit my mistakes. Agreeing to crawl into bed with the devil in a designer suit might be my biggest ever. Because he said something else to me that night:

“I don’t want to sleep with you, Elle, that would be too easy. I want to possess you.”

And Senator Graham Delaney—well, he always gets exactly what he wants.

His Pawn…what a read, good or bad, it made me feel. This book tells the story of Eleanor Sutton Courtney and Graham Delaney.

I’ll start with Elle as she is called by most. She’s the main reason I enjoyed this read. She’s an impressive example of a good, kind, decent human being who has no ulterior motive for any of the things she does. She is naive but street-smart. Bookish but outspoken. Strong back bone but wears her heart on her sleeve.

‘I crave Graham. The uncertainty. The kick in the gut when he opens his awful mouth. The way it hurts when his fingers scorch my skin. I crave the sensation in my chest–my ribcage shrinking in on my heart–whenever he turns his eyes on me.’

Graham on the other hand is on a slow, steep decline into his own personal nightmare. The lines between his personal and professional life blur very early on in the book. He hungers revenge and will stop at nothing to get what he deems is righteous. Does this make him a bad guy? I’ll leave that to you to answer, only remember this; nothing in this book is simply black or white when it comes to Senator Delaney. There are times when he is hateful and despising, but shows small human traits of kindness. However, because of the authors ability to create a well-constructed character, he appears redeemable. Even when I had the urge to stick a red hot poker up his nose!

Secondary characters are far stronger than in some that I have read. They are as important to the story as oxygen is to you and I. Elle’s mother Cheryl is an interesting character; very Stepford wife, but she has a steel spine she used for when she doesn’t agree with her husband’s behaviour. All for a quiet life comes to mind whenever Cheryl is on page with her children and her husband, but remove Robert Courtney from the page and Cheryl comes to life. Chemistry and intense passion are near instant between Graham and Elle. Graham is besotted with Elle, she’s his drug of choice and the way he questions his own mind is probably one of the his sole redeeming qualities in the first half.

‘Inside these walls, in this room, Graham Delaney possesses me.
Just like he promised he would.’
‘No, I don’t give up that easily because your voice is in my head and your scent is still on my sheets–you are everywhere and you have posses me.’

It’s clear to all to see that I adored this book, so why did I only rate four stars? I struggled throughout the entire book to find a way to look past Graham and his ‘questionable’ antics. Elle is so far out of his league and I often just wished she’d wise up and drop him on his head. Accepting any kind of serious relationship was difficult simply because of how distasteful I found his behaviour. I understand why, but I truly struggled to wrap my head around it all and just read for the enjoyment of the romance aspect.

‘He stares at me long and hard, his Adam’s apple dropping. Then he shakes his head and laughs. “It’s when you say things like that, dove…”
“That you what?” He gathers a handful of my hair in his fist and lifts my face to his. “This makes me want to do stupid things.”’

I thoroughly enjoyed the story portrayed within the pages. The good and the bad, just because a characters is asinine and hateful at times, it doesn’t mean they are beyond redemption and or a HEA.

“You know, you talk about sex so much it makes me question if you’re one of those all talk, lame action situations.”

“May I?” He extends his hand, gesturing for mine. Warily, I place my fingers in his and release a yelp when he pulls it under the table, pressing my palm against his zipper. He closes my fingers, one by one, around the unquestionable—and admittedly very, very impressive—bulge.

“That’s not hard either,” he informs me in a low voice, “but if you’re doubtful of my ability to make you forget your fucking name, how to walk, how to eat—and everything else but yes, please, and more—it won’t take long for you to get me there.”

“So that’s why you invited me to dinner, huh?” I snatch my fingers back and grab a handful of my dress to ease the electricity under my skin. It doesn’t help, and I’ve got a feeling I’ll be undone for the rest of the night all thanks to what’s hidden under Graham’s zipper. “To screw me? I guess I had you all wrong.”

“If I wanted only to fuck you, Elle, it wouldn’t have mattered where I took you for dinner—or if I fed you at all.” He whips the plate cover off my food. “Hope you like steak.”

She presses a tea towel to her wound to try to stem the blood, but it is gushing, insistent. The harder she presses the more it pushes back. She cannot look at her sister, at her clammy, staring eyes. A siren grinds into her mind. Louder. Louder. Her eyes are transfixed by repetitive flashing lights. The doorbell rings and she feels as if she is moving through mercury as she steps to answer it. To open the door with a trembling hand – a hand that smells like a butcher’s shop. Three police officers stand in front of her: two men, one woman.
