“That and taking a bullet for you is my job. I do it well. You must believe that, too, or you would have hired someone else.”

“You are one stubborn man. My grandfather’s mules could take
lessons from you. I’ll be out in ten minutes.” She whirled around and headed for her bathroom in the back, then shut the door.
Cutter couldn’t stop the smile from creeping across his face. Had
Shealyn just compared him to an ass?
He’d decided she had when she emerged in a gauzy white dress trimmed in lace that accentuated the hint of gold in her sun-kissed skin. The thin straps clung to the tips of her shoulders, as if threatening to slip down at any moment, and played peekaboo with her blond tresses. The garment stretched tight across her breasts, the three little buttons keeping the bodice shut threatening to pop if she made a too-
sudden move. The flimsy thing also ended well above her knees and, with her white cowboy boots, framed her sleek thighs.
Cutter felt his thoughts evaporate and his tongue go dry. The rest of him turned stone hard. He shouldn’t think twice about Shealyn as a woman, but so far, that seemed to be asking the impossible.
“You’re wearing that?”
She cocked her head at him. “What’s wrong with it? Or are you suggesting this dress is somehow dangerous?”
Her challenge and sass turned him on even more. Hell, everything about her did.
But he was way out of line. The dress portrayed precisely the image she’d cultivated. It was sweetly sexy. Wearing it, Shealyn looked like a gorgeous siren with western flair… and a hint of innocence. The problem—and obviously all the lust—was his alone.
“I’m making you aware that you may attract unwanted male attention in public. But I’ll handle it,” Cutter promised, meeting her gaze and doing his best to shutter the desire burning through his blood.
She stared back, a hint of a smile playing at her lips. “You think I’ll attract male attention, huh?”
Was she fishing for compliments? Her green eyes danced with something he couldn’t put his finger on. Mischief? Flirtation? No. Why would she come on to him when she was already in a high-profile relationship? Shealyn didn’t strike him as one of those women who got off on yanking a man’s chain. Then again, he didn’t know her well.
Whatever she was up to, he couldn’t rise to her bait.
“Ms. West?” He kept his voice as inflectionless and polite as possible.
“Mr. Bryant.” Another hint of playful dare rang in her tone.
“I told you, it’s Cutter.”
“All right. Cutter.” She damn near sighed his name. “You going to answer my question?”
What the hell did she want him to say? Some reckless part of him he’d sworn he didn’t possess itched to simply show her, cross the half- dozen steps between them, take that wisp of a garment in his grip, and tear it off. Once he’d exposed every inch of her body, he would love to put his hands on her, his mouth on her, so she understood what a dress like that did to him. Hell, what she did to him.
A sudden pounding on the door broke the moment between them.
“You ready yet?” Tower shouted from outside.
Despite the man’s insistence, she didn’t move to admit him or even answer. She just stared Cutter’s way. “I’m waiting.”
Cutter searched for a discreet reply. “The dress reveals more skin than it hides. It might give a man the wrong idea.”
“What idea is that?”
The kinds of ideas racing through his head with juggernaut speed and jetting blood south to his cock. “That he can touch you. That he can have you.”
“Is that what this dress makes you think?”
The flash of her eyes and the husky voice she used to ask the question torqued him up. She was definitely fishing for his reaction. Was she hoping he bit because she needed the ego stroke… or was she baiting her hook and tossing it his way because she was actually hoping to reel him in?
“What I think about the dress doesn’t matter.”
“Then why does it bother you? You saw me in less on set.”
Oh, he’d seen her damn near naked. Hour after hour of exposed skin had taunted him with all the beauty a country boy like him would never have the right to possess. But this dress appealed to his deepest fantasies. She looked wholesome yet sensual, a woman aware of her appeal. A female who knew exactly what she wanted in her man…

The trope in this book was one that has been used time and again; however, it was done within an entirely new scenario. Cutter Bryant a former military man turned personal bodyguard is completely selfless. Pledging to help his oldest friend in whatever way matters, knowing how small towns can be and that Brea isn’t as strong as she could be.

Cutter is called away to L.A. to protect an up and coming actress by the name of Shealyn West, only things are not at all what they were originally described as. The romantic electricity zings back and forth right from the first page that these two meet. Both grew up in small towns in the American South, and both believe in living honest and decent lives.

‘Yep, he was going to fall hard for Shealyn West and there wasn’t a thing he could do to stop it anymore. At the moment, he didn’t want to. He’d deal with the fallout later.’

Between scenes highlighting the hard slog of working on a night time soap in Hollywood, and the sexual tension between our stars; there is tension and mystery. Someone(s) is blackmailing the small town Hollywood star, threatening to release one of biggest regrets and ruin her life and her career. The mystery and action was hard and intense, bringing Cutter and Shealyn into near enough distance that they kept circling each other like a hunter looking for the death shot on their wounded prey.

As a lover of mysteries and thrillers, it takes a lot to pull the wool over my eyes. I’m more often than not correct when it comes to pinning the tail on the correct donkey. Only here I never saw half the pieces of the puzzle until Ms Black was ready for me to.

‘Cherished it. Enjoyed the heck out of feeling her ecstasy.
And he climaxed to it, the heady. Dizzying, sizzling sensations burning him, disintegrating him, transforming him.
Yeah, no doubt. He’d fallen in love with the one woman h3e couldn’t have beyond this assignment and didn’t deserve forever.’

I’ve had several books this author has penned sitting in my TBR pile for such a long time. However, Devoted to Pleasure was too tempting to pass up. I just wished the beginning of this book wouldn’t have been so hard to get into at first. I relished the character interaction and the realism to the story. I wistfully wished the evil paparazzi would just get sucked up into a vortex and leave these poor celebrities along, and I truly hoped for a happy ending. Thank you Ms. Black for such an incredible read.

5+++ Stars ~ Reviewed by Sharon Thérèse

To say Eight Goodbyes is a gem of a read would be putting it mildly. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough and even after finishing it, I had an unappeasable urge to reread which I might add, I did. Narrated in third person, the book’s structural framework is an unusual one as it’s split into eight goodbyes, chapters included and in three parts. What really caught my attention was the female protagonist’s growth throughout the book. It’s a very character and plot-driven novel, the different sections highlighting a distinct change in a relationship that appears to be ill-fated from the start. Passions didn’t quite seem to coincide and made me constantly question if the one who loved unconditionally deserved so many goodbyes, their steadfast commitment to conquer all the setbacks literally left me reeling.

“I have this insatiable need to know everything about you. Maybe it’s the scientist in me. I want to be able to figure you out,”

Time is an equally important element in the story’s different settings as you will see. Also, Brae aroused my suspicions by insinuating something ominous was brewing on the horizon. Those very same subtle snippets completely threw my thoughts off kilter. Clutching at straws, I prayed a love that has its boundaries, timezones and crossed countries, would have a chance to flower. She took me on Simon and Tessa’s emotional journey to beautifully described spots around the world, some I’ve been to and others are on my bucket list.

“Next steps scare me.”

I openly admit that I wasn’t too keen on Tessa’s stance in the first part. Her stubbornness and selfishness caused me to say a few choice words to myself which I’d rather not repeat. I wanted her to be on Simons’s wavelength, to be honest with herself, look hard at what she’d achieved, its worth and handle her restlessness differently. However, learning about her past, what she’d been through and how she’d coped eventually helped me connect to her. Then, when the tough got going, I fell head over heels for her. I’d like to mention that if it weren’t for Brae’s par excellence character development regarding Tessa, I wouldn’t have changed my opinion so easily.

“I’m sorry. You must know more and more, I die with every goodbye. It used to be okay. It used to be easy to separate you, keep you in a different section from the rest of my life. Now, all I want is for you to be in it.”

Simon Fremont. Ambitious, seriously nerdy in his field with a fabulous sense of humour verging on sarcasm, is a gorgeously lovable Brit and from my adopted town in Essex to boot! Coincidences and jokes aside, us Brits do have a unique wit and his softened even the hardest moments. It baffled me at times since he has a grave problem and knowing full well his plans weren’t to be rushed, he manoeuvres carefully, always with his heart in Tessa’s hands. And tick tock…the clock won’t stop…does his patience and love have a limit? Will his tolerance fade and will time run out for both of them?

“I know if I push too hard, I’ll lose you. I’m going to give you time to figure it out. Don’t take too long…”

I honestly couldn’t find fault with Simon, whereas Tessa, well…hers aren’t exactly faults per se but what she has on her plate does tend to stand out and certainly consumed me. On reflection, there were times I felt I wasn’t being totally fair to this writer of romance novels who’s trying to find her purpose in life, so please don’t be put off by her. I disliked her demanding literary agent and the influence she had over Tessa irritated me no end. And Andrew…hmm, wasn’t too keen on him either. On the whole, the secondary characters are a very likable bunch, especially Tessa’s brother and his girlfriend.

“Live is short, we have to make the most of it.”

Details. I recently read a book where the pace of the narrative was stunted by overuse. I lost interest because I found them immaterial. This is most definitely not the case in Eight Goodbyes. Brae’s offering is as such that I couldn’t help but cry out for more, so much so I did an all-nighter and believe me, this book isn’t an easy one in the respect that I spent a lot of the dark hours sobbing into my pillow. The storyline. In all its originality and a ginormous twist I never in a million years saw coming, the author gave me hope and made me realise every precious moment in our life is worth cherishing. Her magical penmanship has given this standalone a real life feel and undoubtedly while you’re reading, all the emotions will seduce you. Embrace your feelings and every single moment of this love story. You won’t ever regret it. Bravo Brae!
