REVIEW & EXCEPT ~ TIMID by Devney Perry

Willa Doon has always been shy. Her quiet demeanor was something she’s always embraced. That is, until Jackson Page moves to town. The one man she desperately wants to take notice struggles to remember her name.

Year after year, Willa stands by, watching as the bartender slash playboy drowns his demons in beer and sex. Then one night, he shows up at her door, suddenly aware that the girl he’s seen around Lark Cove is now a beautiful woman.

Except what he doesn’t remember is that this visit isn’t his first. They spent a night together once before. A night he’s forgotten, thanks to a bottle of tequila.

A night that crushed a timid girl’s heart, and set a broken man on the path to heal them both.

4.5 Stars ~ Reviewed by Sharon Thérèse at KFF

Perry writes such lovely stories and true to her descriptive style and storytelling technique, the second stand-alone novel in the Lark Cove series is just as unputdownable as was Tattered. Her characters are just as engaging too, but let’s talk about the cover! Willa Doon looking out to sea gave me the impression she was trying to find herself and maybe she is because she’s an awfully timid lass. Like watching a butterfly emerge from its chrysalis, she eventually spreads her wings and catches the attention of the man she’s been crushing on for what seemed like forever. I also love books which focus on family life and wasn’t let down as Perry gave me plenty of that. However, what makes things more intriguing is there are two sides to the coin. On the one hand, Willa couldn’t wish for more loving parents; unfortunately, I can’t say the same for Jackson Page.

‘The timid blond girl? She was the science teacher’s daughter and a kid. There was no way Willa was this gorgeous woman.’

Willa. An unusual name and not to be confused with Willow is the quiet one in her group of friends. Trying to take her besties’ good-natured ribbing as it comes, more often than not they get her blushing with their innuendos or worse, cause frustration. What I did find a tad strange was why she had trouble overcoming her shyness, seeing as she works with kids, has abounding enthusiasm for her job and in her mid-twenties. Having said that, the folk in her small cozy seaside town can count on her for just about anything. When Jackson makes a move, she can’t believe her luck, her dream’s come true. Ahh, if it were that easy, we wouldn’t have a story, now would we! The book fire’s up from here on in and me; well, I totally understood her annoyance and happy she’d stuck to her guns. This is where Willa’s hidden personality wakes up, showing me she could stand up for herself. Not one to be taken for a fool, she’d make Jackson work to get back into her good books, and I loved it.

“Why couldn’t my friends just be supportive? Why did they always make me feel ridiculous and naïve?”

Jackson being in a bit of a tight spot made me smile. All of a sudden, he’s getting the cold shoulder and trying to fathom out why Willa doesn’t want to have anything to do with him. Déjà vu feelings run riot. As his confusion was worthy of scrutiny, I found myself wanting to know more about this drop-dead gorgeous hunk of a man. Ooh my, no wonder Willa had been smitten with him! But it won’t be until quite a way into the story that he discovers what he’d done to deserve her aloofness. And for him, it was quite the shocker! His playboy reputation doesn’t help matters either and if he wants to calm turbulent waters, he’ll have to do things he’s never, ever had to do before.

“…I know I’ve slipped a few times and called her Willow. But in my defense, I’ve always sucked at remembering names.”

I really liked Jackson’s close-knit friends who he totally relies on. His backstory unravels slowly and not one to open up, only they know why he acts the way he does. When one has had so much to contend with in the past, it reflects on the present and this is where Perry’s exquisite writing explores his thoughts to a tee. His need for a quiet drama free life, the respect shown towards everyone in town, and a job he felt comfortable with meant more to me than perhaps, his lack of ambition. It definitely shaped the narrative, his persona revealing a character with its weaknesses and strengths. For this reason, I felt Timid was more his story than Willa’s.

“Then you’re part of this family, and when one of us is having a hard time, we talk it through.”

A slight age gap; a first love, a romance that’s steered through a bumpy road and supported from differing viewpoints kept me on my toes, especially when emotions ran high. Fabulous banter exceeded my wishes, and just enough steaminess in the right places couldn’t have been better. The secondary characters are a very likable lot, except one who sparked disdain. And the setting…wow! Perry enhanced it in such a way that I felt as if I were there, enjoying the stunning surroundings. The pace of the story isn’t exactly a fast one; however, from the first page to an epilogue which brought out all the feels, enthralled me. Bravo Perry and looking forward to Tragic.

I scooched my chair in toward the table, trying to put a little more space between Jackson and me, but he wasn’t having it.He put both hands on the back of my chair, then leaned in close. “Hi, Willa.”“Uh . . . hi.” I shivered at the heat from his chest on my bare shoulders. Why was he standing so close? My parents were right there. Our table was one of four tall, square ones in the center of the room and there was plenty of space between tables.Plenty. P-L-E-N-T-Y.But was Jackson using any of that plentiful space? No sirree. He stayed pressed against the back of my chair, like there were only three inches of usable space behind him, not three feet.

My skin prickled he was so close. I tried to nudge my chair forward again but it barely moved. Sweat beaded on my temples and I pulled in a shaking breath.

Jackson’s woodsy, rich scent was everywhere. It overpowered the stale beer, pizza and peanuts, and I inhaled a deep breath, unable to resist.

Sexy Hot Forest. That’s what they’d call his cologne.

Célian Laurent.

Manhattan royalty.

Notorious playboy.

Heir to a media empire.

…And my new boss.

I could have impressed him, if not for last month’s unforgettable one-night stand.

I left it with more than orgasms and a pleasant memory—namely, his wallet.

Now he’s staring me down like I’m the dirt under his Italian loafers, and I’m supposed to take it.

But the thing about being Judith “Jude” Humphry is I have nothing to lose.

Brooklyn girl.

Infamously quirky.

Heir to a stack of medical bills and a tattered couch.

When he looks at me from across the room, I see the glint in his eyes, and that makes us rivals.

He knows it.

So do I.

Every day in the newsroom is a battle.

Every night in his bed, war.

But it’s my heart at stake, and I fear I’ll be raising the white flag.

He had an American accent. Not French. American.Smooth. Familiar. Ordinary. He fired out sentences at the speed of light. I heard him, but I couldn’t listen. Shock gripped my body as the pieces of the puzzle fell into place. My dirty one-night stand was my boss. My lying, American boss. And now I had to deal with that—hopefully for a very long time, because I desperately needed this job.

Someone snapped their fingers, and my gaze shot from Célian’s face to Grayson.

His forehead had crumpled into a frown. “You look like you’re trying hard not to cry or having a really intense orgasm. I’m hoping for you that it’s the latter and some kind of a weird-slash-awesome condition. You okay?”

I nodded, scraping up a smile. “Sorry. Zero orgasms happening under this dress. I just zoned out for a second.”Lies. I was about to orgasm just remembering how good Célianhad felt parting my thighs with his big, callused hands and dipping his tongue into my slit.

Then words stopped streaming down on everyone’s heads like a scalding shower, and I realized that indeed there was something worse than hearing Célianspeak in his perfect American English. And that was not hearing him speak at all. Because now the icicles were pointed at me like a cocked gun.

I glanced up to meet his gaze. He stared at me for exactly one second before his focus snapped to Grayson. “Am I understood, Gregory?” he asked.

“Crystal clear, sir,” Grayson bowed, his voice trembling at the edges.

Célian jerked his chin toward me. “Your cover girl material is going downhill.”

God. Damn. Bastard.

He recognized me, and I knew it. His eyes had kindled, melting the ice and growing darker the minute our gazes mingled. He remembered, and maybe it killed him that I was here in the same way it buried me.

I want my iPod back, my gaze told him. I had over three thousand songs on that thing, and they were all too good to be wasted on that jerk.

“Jude Humphry. Junior reporter. It’s her first day,” Grayson highlighted, almost pleadingly. He shifted in my direction, as if he might need to physically protect me from the sharp-tongued, suited monster.

I suppressed a smile when I realized I’d told Célianmy last name was Spears. Well, he certainly wasn’t a Timberlake. He was a Laurent. An American monarch through and through. A billionaire, a powerful force, and judging by our one and only encounter—a raging playboy.

This man was inside you, I internally shrieked. And not just once. His cock was buried so deep in you, you screamed. You can still taste the salty, earthy flavor of his cum.You know he has a freckle on his lower back. You know what sound he makes when he empties inside a woman.

I internally thanked my mind for ruining my panties in public, and nodded. “Pleasure to meet you, sir.” I offered him my hand, my face flushing with embarrassment at my choice of words.

Everyone was looking at us, and there were at least fifty people in the room. Célian—if that was even his name—ignored my outreached hand. Instead, he turned his face to the man beside him. “Mathias, any other words of wisdom?”

Mathias? Wasn’t that his father? Just how cold was the man with the icy blue eyes?

“I think you touched everything,” said the big boss—and he did have a heavy French accent, so at least the lie had a seed. Mathias stared at me placidly, like he could read the secret his son and I shared on my face.

Célian spun toward me, uncuffing his cufflinks and rolling his sleeves up his veiny forearms. “Accounting can go back to their unfortunate line of work. Couture is excused from this meeting—though not forgiven for their horrid blog. Miss Humphry?” He snapped his fingers impatiently.

He was already waltzing down the narrow hallway, knowing I’d chase him like a puppy, and no doubt taking pleasure in that fact.

“I have a bone to pick with you.”

Bone, boner—same difference, right?

I shot Grayson a please-save-my-butt look. His eyes said, I would but I still have a life to live.

I followed Célian down the hall, my Chucks slapping the floor in a hurry. He sliced through the throng of accountants, then stopped at a corner office, opened the door, barked “Out!” to the man inside, and tilted his head for me to go in. I did. He closed the door, and it was just the two of us.

Two feet of empty space between us.

★ ★ ★ ★

After reading the blurb for this book, I was looking forward to reading it. A taboo storyline. Girl meets boy etc, only this boy is a man at least 20 years older and is the father of her boyfriend. This is definitely going to be an interesting read.

Cassidy is in a relationship with Preston and they are both home for the summer from university. Preston is staying with his dad who is a busy doctor at the local hospital. Preston is an immature selfish kind of guy. His relationship with his father is rather strained due to happenings in his childhood. His relationship with Cassidy seems to be heading in the same direction.

Cassidy felt that her relationship with Preston had changed recently and that they both wanted different things. Add that to her growing attraction to Dr. Lowe. A bolt out of the blue! Just looking at Dr. Lowe was making her shiver; those telltale signs her body was giving her and showing made her realise just how attracted she was to him. The feelings were so intense she couldn’t ignore it. Did she want to? Was the feeling mutual? She wasn’t sure.

When push comes to shove, she made her move and the outcome was the realization that the feelings and attraction she felt was in actual fact, mutual. Would this couple act upon their feelings, knowing that whatever the outcome, Preston would not be happy? The stigma surrounding the age gap was another thing they would have to contend with. Were they both ready to move forward and declare their feelings to the world knowing the upset it would cause? Read and you shall find all the answers you are looking for because you know I can’t divulge that information.

On a side note, I would just like to say that I felt this story could have had more depth to it. The storyline was ok but to me, it just seemed to skim the surface. The sexual content was high and certainly well written but yet again, I felt there was too much of it. I know right! How can a book have too much sex in it?

Maybe less sex and more depth is the answer.

Nikki Sloane landed in graphic design after her careers as a waitress, a screenwriter, and a ballroom dance instructor fell through. Love left me off its to-do list.

I date. I’m all for giving guys a chance. I’ve just never met the one.

Until on a spring morning in the English countryside, a tall, dark stranger emerges from the mist. Logan Steele is all tousled hair, hard chest and lips so perfect I want to reach out and touch them just to check they’re real. I’m sure that’s a thunderclap of chemistry I feel between us.

Did I mention he’s an Earl with a self-made fortune?

A billionaire who works tirelessly for charity?

And he’s so hot, watching him is like staring at the sun.

But like I said, love isn’t rooting for me.

When I find out Logan Steele is out to destroy everything I’ve dedicated my life to protect, the chemistry disappears and the hope that had blossomed my chest turns to rage.

It no longer matters that he quickens my pulse just saying my name, weakens my knees with a single touch and that he might just be the greatest kisser that ever lived.

I might believe in love but Logan Steele is definitely not the one.

A standalone romance.

Darcy Westbury is the sister of Ryder who we met in Duke of Manhattan. She loves her countryside lifestyle and is quite content within the village lifestyle. Strong independent and happy to absorb herself in running the estate in which she grew up in. Until she bumps accidentally into Logan Steele with his handsome face and she is drawn to him. He is also an Earl who dedicates some of his time to charity when he isn’t running his company in London. There’s a glimpse of chemistry between them on the first meeting but Darcy learns he’s out to destroy everything she’d worked so hard to protect. Her attraction for him soon turns into pent-up rage, enough to make him devastatingly infuriated. Darcy may feel like she wants to kiss him and she might believe in love, but Logan Steele is possibly all kinds of wrong for her.

Logan Steele, the Earl who mixes his living arrangements, spending his time in London working and his weekends in the countryside. He’s filthy rich and a hard-hitting businessman. Logan is the typical hot alpha that is very sure of himself and appealing to women. There’s never a lack of beauties that he snares for a one-time thing and never getting attached; however, Darcy exudes feelings in him that he never thought possible but he finds her so infuriatingly independent and beautiful which makes him somewhat drawn to her.

The characters are well developed, and I loved the sassiness of Darcy and her strength. I sensed a vulnerability about her which she covered up well with confidence and her driven attitude to fight for what she believed in always keeping Logan on his toes. Logan’s strong alpha persona you expect from Bay’s storytelling but underneath it all, I learnt he also had a vulnerable side to him.

I don’t want to give too much away, but I promise it’ll make you laugh, tear up and have you needing to take a cold shower because boy, was it hot and dirty! The chemistry and steam were in spades but not too much to ruin a very well spun tale. Submerged in the story, I completely forgot what was going on around me. I can also promise that you’ll have trouble putting it down, so one click only when you can give it your undivided attention. It’ll suck you in enough to make you think you’re actually in the countryside right alongside the characters. I loved the villagers and especially Darcy’s friend Aurora who was a great support to her, their friendship making me smile a lot. Aurora wanted to see her best friend happy and was quite vocal in what she thought Darcy should do about Logan. I can’t quite put into words how much I loved this story but it definitely deserves more than five stars. I loved the concept of something different given to the story. Bravo Ms. Bay for another fantastically written tale with a gorgeous cover to boot.
