The first of a new series by this author featuring the Arrowood brothers, this is Connor’s story. A contemporary second chance romance, this book looks like the start of a very promising series; it can be read as a stand-alone and doesn’t end in a cliff-hanger.

Connor is the youngest of the Arrowood brothers. A Navy seal who just finished his last deployment, he vowed never to return to his hometown. He and his brothers Declan, Jacob and Sean were victims of domestic abuse and survived their father’s wrath. Each one of them carved his own path and career. Connor who was forced to return to his hometown has a lot of emotional baggage to deal with and it looks like his life gets more complicated when he meets Ellie. One thing I guarantee, you will fall head over heels in love with this man, a stand-up kind of guy, protective and loyal to his brothers.

“He’s the man to slay dragons and has the fortitude to do it. I don’t fear telling him things. He is the calm in the storm that rages around me.”

Ellie is the brow-beaten wife of Kevin and mother of seven-year-old Hadley. When things at home get worse, she has nowhere to go and no one to turn to until Connor moves in at the farm next door. Could he save her from her husband? Some questions arise and secrets come out when they finally got to know each other.

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from this story but I loved how it developed. Narrated in dual points of view, Ellie’s character as an abused wife will draw out a lot of sympathy from the readers I am sure, but I wished that she developed a backbone sooner rather than later. Her character becoming an independent woman and standing up for herself was a slow process but she gets there in the end. Meanwhile, Connor is your almost perfect hero. He is the one who was strong enough to get out of an abusive home and managed to become a Navy seal who saved lives. His love for Ellie and Hadley outshines his darkest moments.

The antagonist in this book was too conveniently dealt with and I hoped that there was more nail-biting drama, but I guess the domestic violence in Ellie’s home is more than enough for us to cope with. The relationship that develops between Ellie and Connor is the perfect second-chance romance that will truly captivate your heart.

The secondary characters provide an interesting backdrop to Ellie and Connor’s relationship and show how important it is to have the support of family and friends. We are given a glimpse of the other brothers and the build-up to the next book is more obvious at the end when we get to have a quick look at Declan’s story. I am so looking forward to his story and I can hardly wait! I highly recommend this book.
