5-Stars ~ Reviewed by Sharon Thérèse

Shen has delivered the unexpected and in my book, easily one of the best novels she has written so far. Putting her unique stamp on a trope I love, each of the protagonists’ emotional journeys is a tale in itself. And the title that conveys layers of meaning would consequently show its perfection. Among other things that grabbed my attention was the well-designed book cover, setting the tone to this gritty story.

Playing with Fire is nothing less than spectacular. I am very much a banter snob and just WOW! It’s snappy, powerful and hurtful all rolled into one. The comebacks, ooh, my! So, who’s on the giving and receiving end of such snarky remarks? Grace Shaw, for one. She’s the quintessential heroine; the sassy lass whose strength never wavers, her inner beauty and imperfections deliberately hidden from prying eyes. With no option to make herself heard, sooner or later she’ll be seen.

‘My battle scars were external, on the surface. His were internal, but cut deep.’

Seeing as West St. Claire is so popular, keeping most of his peers at arm’s length was something of a conundrum. The chip he carries on his shoulder threw me off-kilter too, but I liked how he wiggled his way into Grace’s life and helped her step out of her comfort zone. What I found disturbing were his inner-thoughts, and it wasn’t until I got well into the read that I discovered why he felt as he did.

“West is fearless, and stupidity is bravery’s wife. Recklessness is its wife, something else he has in abundance.”

The ambience surrounding Grace and West is by no means hunky-dory. They’re both going to have to make peace with the past and learn to accept the present if they want to break free. I am in awe of Shen’s storytelling, her prose and dialogue. She evoked all my emotions by keeping the tension flowing and has given all her characters merit where it was due or what they deserved. I cannot recommend this page-turner of a novel enough. Bravo!

Five-Stars ~ Reviewed by Sharon Thérèse

Warren left me speechless. I thoroughly enjoyed Diamond in the Rough but Gold Minebook two in the Diamond Trilogy blew my mind. What a tense, fast-paced and magnificently written dark romance it is. Desperate to know how Holly Frank and Elijah North’s story would pan out, I read the entire book in one sitting.

Holly is suspended in a constant state of danger, adding to the suspense but as the plot thickens, she’ll be faced with a life-changing decision. Ah, but it’s a double-edged sword, and it seemed to me that whichever way she turned, the consequences would be less than favourable.

“You should know that running only makes me chase you.”

Although Holly unwittingly made herself a target in a dangerous scheme, her performance exceeded my expectations. This shy woman grows stronger, the way she dealt with her fears and stood up to those who threatened her was a joy to see. How she accepted her fate, and her trying to protect a family member who’d been nothing but problematic made me fall harder for her than I already had.

‘He inspires a myriad of feeling in me, but not fear.’

Whilst Elijah is still a bit of an enigma to his brothers, the interaction between them is something else. It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of Liam and Joshua who I’d met in the North Security series and Audition. Man, are they in their element here or what! I loved that they called Elijah out and the comebacks, lightening up the mood in a sticky situation were fabulous. I have yet to suss out Adam and eager to see if he shows his true colours in Silver Lining.

‘It’s hard to believe in hope when you’ve held on to despair for so long.’

Elijah is harsh on himself, so when he finally opens up to Holly, I was hoping he’d stop dwelling on his tragic past and learn to move on. Trouble is there’s a nasty piece of work too close for comfort and has no plans to let either of them off the hook. I loved the cat and mouse intrigue and whoa, in a twisted turn of events, I was left gobsmacked.

‘We are fundamentally different creatures. He’s a tiger. I’m a mouse.’

I’m familiar with one of the book’s spectacular settings, the author’s descriptive writing taking me back there. Having said this, a lot of the scenes are downright nail-biting if not graphically sensual. Also, I have to mention that the multiple narrators gave even more depth and meaning to the story than I could have hoped for. I never expected the story to take the turn it did and cannot wait for the conclusion to this outstanding story. Bravo, Warren!

YOU ARE MY HOPE by Willow Winter is available now!

You Are My Hope, the emotional and gripping conclusion to the
You Are Mine duet from USA Today bestselling author
Willow Winters is available now!

Mason Thatcher gave me chills when I first laid eyes on him. The good kind. The kind that make your body ache, and your heart hammer.

It’s not fair that his touch eased my pain.
That his lips on mine made my worries vanish.
That his love gave me a reason to breathe again.

With him I felt complete, as if fate had given me a second chance.

Then I learned the truth: the sins and secrets of what had really brought us together.
I only hope we could go back. I never could have imagined this.

This is the second book of a duet. You Are My Reason, book one, must be read first.

I was left on a precipice in You Are My Reason and couldn’t wait to dive into You Are My HopeWinters hasn’t made her readers wait long for the conclusion to this angsty romance thriller that had me sitting on the edge of my seat.

‘His love and devotion to my happiness are what will ruin me entirely.’

How wrong I was in thinking that it couldn’t get more complicated for the heroine. Untold truths abound, lies are the name of the game and addictive passion builds up from page to page, keeping me enthralled as Mason Thatcher and Julia’s story untangles.

‘But he had his reasons. I can’t deny that it was wrong, but so much was wrong.’

Mason doesn’t consider himself to be a good man. Despite having reasons to think as he does, what I liked about him is he’s prepared to go all out for the woman who’d robbed his very being since the moment he’d set his eyes on hers. So, will Julia learn to forgive his sins, and learn to understand why he’d been forced to take such drastic measures? The only way the reader will find out why danger is lurking in every corner is by reading the You Are Mine duet!

‘My body and my mind are confused. I feel attacked and cornered, but I don’t know who to blame other than myself.’

Winters’ writing is descriptive, stylish and although it’s fast-paced, she’d cannily held back what I yearned to know. The dialogue flows; however, Mason and Julia’s inner-fears still come across loud and clear. Readers who enjoy action and abundant suspense, dirty-talking alpha heroes and addlepated female characters, this duet narrated from a dual perspective is for you!

‘We were never meant to be. It was a mistake. I deserve this pain.’

You Are My Reason ( You Are Mine Book 1)

It’s been a long time since I’ve looked at a man and wanted something more.
Even longer since one has looked at me with a gaze that I couldn’t tear my eyes from.

No one is perfect, but that’s how it felt to be in his arms.
I started to think everything was going to be alright. That life had finally put the pieces of my broken heart back together.

Fate may have brought us together, it’s a pretty little thought my poetic mind had.
But there’s no doubt that the sins of his past would tear us apart.

4-Stars ~ Reviewed by Sharon Thérèse

LeNoir is back with a riveting novel that not only captivated me, but also highlights the difficulties of granting every possible wish to someone dear! This isn’t just a romance where you’re riding a rollercoaster of emotions, it’s a read to be savoured, to hold on to every word, passage and relish those few hours getting lost in hopes and desires. The author’s description of her protagonists’ depths and challenges and exploring a sensitive subject is really well done. I was taken on a vividly descriptive journey to places I’d love to visit and activities I’d love to experience, the writing so bold and bright that I could easily see myself succumbing to what was wished for! LeNoir hasn’t cut corners either, her prose hitting even the most seasoned bibliophile’s inner feelings.

‘And then , suddenly , when you’re at the deepest end of your emotional abyss, memories of a life of laughter and contentment pop in to walk you off the ledge of despair.’

Marlon Brooks, the maker of wishes, isn’t your typical hero. His roots are saddening, his goals reached through sheer perseverance was without a doubt because of solid influences. So, did this compassionate guy wise beyond his years lead me astray with his charm? Not for one minute! I was utterly focused on his professionalism, him making sure everything ran smoothly for his new client. When Jaidyn Hughes demanded, he complied, but is there an ulterior motive? You’ll only find out by reading the book!

“We spend our time trying to fight off the inevitable instead of enjoying what is right in front of us.”

Although Jaidyn is mature for her age, there were times she couldn’t see the forest for the trees and that irritated me a tad. Yeah, there’s a third party involved, adding spice to the read. Later, I realized I was being unfair because if there’s something she’s got going for her, it has to be her heart of gold. Her will to accomplish what she’d set out to do gained my respect too and I adored Marlon’s unwavering support and encouragement. The way LeNoir held back his secret, goodness me…it’s nothing less than nerve-racking!

‘I didn’t deserve her. She should have a man who put her trust in a crystal vase and kept it protected for all eternity. Not a man who kept secrets. A man who lied by omission.’

I was sold on Robert, Jaidyn’s dad. The rapport he has with his daughter and Marlon is something I would have loved to have had with those closest to me. Being exceptionally successful doesn’t mean that we’re exempt from what life dishes out. Coming to terms with the inevitable isn’t easy, a detail LeNoir bought home with the utmost care. Another thing I liked immensely was the family standards on both sides; their past and present history provoking distress and happiness.

“To have the capacity of giving away your heart says more about you, than it does about those who break it.”

Narrated from a dual perspective in past tense, I loved the banter, the solid plot structure and character development. The ending…imperfectly perfect. There’s no denying that Marlon and Jaidyn’s chemistry is off the charts but I, for one, would have liked a little less steaminess. I thoroughly enjoyed The Wish, so take no notice of my personal opinion. Lovers of contemporary romance, grab this thought-provoking book! Bravo, LeNoir!

“Hmmm, I didn’t see anything about a ‘fiancé’ in your file, Ms. Hughes.” He said, a sour note coating his otherwise smooth voice.
“Must have been an oversight.” It wasn’t.
“Must have been, indeed.” And he knew it.
“Do you always call your clients on a Sunday evening?” I asked, curious as to why he worked on weekends.
“No, I don’t. In fact, I haven’t taken a case in almost a year.”
I audibly gasped at his admission and I could hear the satisfaction in his chuckle. The man was throwing little nuggets of information my way, enticing me, daring me to give into my curiosity.
But I wouldn’t.
“We should talk again soon so we can go over the entire list before I tell my father my thoughts?” I ended my phrase on a question hoping I didn’t sound like I was giving orders but also not wanting to give him the impression that I was searching out his phone calls.
Because I wasn’t.
Not at all.
I had a…Calvin.
“We should. Sweet dreams, Ms. Hughes,” he practically purred, his voice eliciting dirty thoughts I had no business having.”

THE ANTI-BOYFRIEND by Penelope Ward is available now!

USA Today bestselling author Penelope Ward’s brand new contemporary romance standalone, THE ANTI-BOYFRIEND, is live!

He was wrong for me—so wrong that I’d dubbed him the “anti-boyfriend.”

At first, my neighbor Deacon frustrated me.

Sure, he was great-looking and friendly.

But our walls were thin, and on occasion, he’d bring women to his place and keep me awake while he “entertained” them.

As a single mother to an infant, I didn’t appreciate it.

So, finally it was my turn.

When my daughter wouldn’t stop wailing one night, Mr. Manwhore came knocking on my door.

Miraculously, at the sound of his voice, Sunny stopped crying. And when he held her…she eventually fell asleep in his arms.

Deacon was rough on the exterior, but apparently on the inside? Mr. Single-and-Ready-to-Mingle was a baby whisperer.

After that night, we became friends.

He’d go for coffee runs. Come over to chat. Normal friend stuff.

But over time, our conversations ran deeper. We got closer.

Until one night we crossed the line.

Our friendship turned into a complicated mess.

I’d gone and fallen for a guy who’d sworn off commitment and kids.

I knew Deacon was starting to care for me too, even though Sunny and I didn’t fit into any plan he’d ever imagined for himself.

He was wrong for me—so wrong that I’d dubbed him the “anti-boyfriend.”

Then why did I wish more than anything that I could be the one woman to change him?

Ward’s storyline is quite different from what she’s written to date, and although I enjoy the friends-to-lovers trope immensely, what stood out were her protagonists’ believable life hurdles. It’s a well-paced, not easy to put down romance and I appreciated her not rushing the steaminess.

‘She didn’t know it, but she and I were kindred spirits. I knew full well what it was like to have to redefine your life.’

Romance isn’t just one of the noticeable parts. Ward has put a new spin on an old tale with very likeable characters who have to learn to trust and make peace with past happenings. Neighbourly love and being able to rely on them when the tough gets going is basically what Ward’s driven home. Hmm…but there’s an elephant in the room that’s hard to ignore. Scorching chemistry! When getting involved seems to be wrong on all levels for one, it might just work for the other. The reader has no idea whether Deacon and Careys will find happiness or heartbreak until, of course, the author reveals all.

“But here’s the thing: I’m a risk, Carys. A huge risk. I don’t know that I’m right for you.”

Deacon is simply gorgeous. Although he’s warm, kind and caring, his situation is a conundrum of sorts. Holding back his fears made me wonder why he gave himself so freely when there was so much at stake. I felt his confusion time after time. On the other hand, Careys is much more open. Lol, she had me grinning from ear to ear when she confronted him about his nocturnal escapades, and here begins their friendship.

‘And there it was. I’d been officially friend-zoned.’

Careys has not only had her fair share of ups and downs but grabbed the bull by the horns to boot. I couldn’t help respecting this gracious young lady; what she’s accomplished and what she’d lost without being remorseful. And isn’t her name unusual? I liked that she helped me pronounce it!

“You know… I used to imagine where I’d be at twenty-five. My life looks nothing like that. But I’m okay with it.”

Following banter, quick-witted comebacks and great secondary character development make for an entertaining read. The nosybody had me laughing out loud, and the little one melted my heart. I liked how the author dealt with a condition which I, for one, have little knowledge of, and the dual perspective gave me more insight into Deacon and Careys’ feelings. Does he deserve to be crowned The Anti-Boyfriend, or will Carey succumb to his charms? You’ll only find out by reading Ward’s emotional story. Bravo!

“Lastly, Ms. Hughes,” he said, leaning forward on his forearms, his cufflinks tapping the wooden desk, and pinning me with a look of pure sexual dominance that rocked me straight to my core, “my name is on every contract that we implement.” His stare never wavered, not until his words hit home. He was the owner of this shindig.

“Oh.” I blinked, shaking my head, feeling the heat returning to my cheeks and looking at my dad hoping he hadn’t witnessed his daughter’s arousal live and in high definition. He seemed too young to have such a successful business and too full of himself for it to be a non-profit. As though he’d been reading my erotic thoughts from the moment we’d met, he raised a single brow, focused the intensity of his gaze solely on me, and asked with his panty disintegrating timber of voice:

“Now, how about you tell me how I can be of service to you?”

Well, damn, that was a loaded question and I had a list-full of answers.

RELEASE DAY BLITZ ~ THE REALITY OF EVERYTHING by Rebecca Yarros is available now!

USA Today bestselling author Rebecca Yarros’ fifth emotional military romance in the Flight & Glory series, THE REALITY OF EVERYTHING,
is available now!

Two years after the man she loved was killed in Afghanistan, Morgan Bartley is trying to put the pieces of her life back together. The reno on her dilapidated beach house in the Outer Banks might be just the distraction she needs to keep her debilitating anxiety attacks at bay and begin to heal her heart…if she can ignore the ridiculously handsome guy next door.

At twenty-eight, single-dad Jackson Montgomery’s life revolves around his five-year-old daughter and his job as a search-and-rescue pilot for the coast guard. He’s no stranger to saving a damsel in distress, and though his gorgeous new neighbor is clearly in distress, she’s no damsel. She’s stubborn as hell with walls a mile thick, and the dog tags hanging from her rearview mirror give him a pretty good clue as to why.

It doesn’t matter that their attraction is undeniable—she swore she’d never fall for another pilot, let alone a military man. There are some wounds time can’t heal, and some fears too consuming to conquer.

She’s a barely breathing heartbreak on the edge of recovery.
He’s a crash waiting to happen.
Together they could have it all…if they can endure the coming storm.

Four Stars ~ Reviewed by Sharon Thérèse

This is the first book I’ve read in the Flight & Glory series, and not once did I feel like a fish out of water in Jackson Montgomery and Morgan Bartly’s story. Yes, Yarros’ exceptional writing is delivered in such a way that newbies won’t feel lost. Saying that, after reading The Reality of Everything, I have a lot of catching up to do with the Flyboys.

To begin with, I had trouble connecting to the heroine. I took into consideration her past trauma and how it had affected her present-day attitude and although she explains her feelings well, I couldn’t quite get my head around how she treated those who cared for her. However, my opinion did a one hundred and eighty-degree turn when I learnt more about what had happened.

Jax is perfectly gorgeous in every way! Generous, caring and responsible, this guy who wears his heart on his sleeve could do no wrong in my eyes. His five-year-old daughter charmed the pants off me and I especially liked the unbreakable bond he has with his colleagues-cum-friends. On the other hand, Morgan’s drifted apart from her bestie, the whys and wherefores coming to light in one very emotional showdown. And then there’s Sam. Ooh, my dear heart, I’d love to have a close friend like her!

“I’m not being coy or playing games, which is ironic since I used to be really good at all that. I’m genuinely telling you to run for your life.”

I did so appreciate how the author conveyed Jax and Morgan’s chemistry. Like a slow dance, they test out new steps not moving forward too quickly. And although Morgan takes cues from Jax, she, for sure, has reasons to be apprehensive.

‘He let me move at my own pace without so much as hinting that it was too slow for him.’

The build-up towards the ending had me sitting on the edge of my seat and definitely made up for a couple of parts that I felt a tad drawn out. Another issue I had was what felt like unfinished business with one of the characters, but throughout the book the dialogue is quick-witted; the comebacks rivetingly effective.

“What we have is something worth fighting for, and I’m climbing into the ring, ready to take the punches, but she’s already left the arena.”

Overcoming grief, learning to forgive and having security is in my book, some of life’s priorities. This, and putting oneself last while investing in that make or break it moment is what Yarros has driven home to her readers from a strong dual narrative. Get a man-sized hankie handy ready ‘cause you’ll need it! I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend The Reality of Everything, to readers who enjoy contemporary/military romance. Bravo!

Sharon’s 3.75-Star Review

Although I’m an avid reader of contemporary romance novels and most subgenres, the short synopsis of My Darling grabbed my attention. It left nothing to the imagination and more so because normally a third-person present tense is used regardless of the story’s structure. Could it be that the first-person narrative takes precedence in this book? Well yes, but the protagonists’ thoughts regarding other characters resembled direct speech as ‘you’ is spoken frequently. The catch—three voices are heard, yet a fourth is felt strongly. And I have to say that Robson’s writing style is daring. There’s no prologue, chapters or epilogue; just names at the beginning of new passages, and the reader gets to learn about past happenings in sporadical flashbacks. One would think it’s not going to make for easy reading, but I found the book’s tone thoroughly engaging.

To begin with, I had trouble matching the characters’ love interests. Never one to let these details get the better of me, I jotted down who was who and lift off, the story started to flow. It’s quite fast-paced, extremely descriptive whilst in some scenes commentaries about what the players were wearing and more I found a tad overdone. However, this other hiccup was nothing in comparison to such a thrilling read. Basically, jealousy is the menu of the day. Throw in psychotic minds for seconds worked wonders and becomes the backbone of the story. Sitting back, I seriously had to consider certain actions taken. Were they a form for worse or greater things to evolve? It’s up to you to judge!

‘Men never mean what they say.’

Jade and Tomas are newbies in the neighborhood. She’s sharp-witted, pushy but more important, mistrustful of her husband. Her account of how she felt showed me how mentally unhinged she is. Tomas is loving and despite being aware of his wife’s issues, he’s quick to excuse her. Goodness me, who lives and works across the street I didn’t know whether to pity, applaud or breathe deeply in hope.

‘She comes every day. Watching me like a hawk.’

Overflowing with twists; the one in which I never saw coming certainly left reeling! I have to mention the cover. You’ll understand its perfection when you dive into the book. I’m not going to say too much about the other characters or the well-thought-out plot as it would be a shame to spoil this riveting standalone for you. Seeing as Emma’s a professional woman, I have to add with tongue in cheek that I found her naïvity somewhat misleading. And the boyfriend—could he hold the key? One thing’s for sure, the police will have their work cut out for them.

‘I have taken such a risk for you.’

I liked the exactitude of Robson’s research and even though I’m not a fan of choppy prose, it worked well because more often than not, this is how we speak. Albeit having had trouble rating this story, it’s bitingly memorable and for readers who like spine-tingling cut-throat suspense, this is for you! Bravo, Robson!

Thank you Avon Books and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read My Darling in exchange for an honest review.

Anna’s 4-Star Review

This author’s style of writing has always fascinated me, it takes a while to get used to but it draws you in. This book is one of my favourite genres, a psychological thriller. One thing I always noticed in Ms. Robson’s books is that her female characters are strong, independent and messed up in some ways.

This tale is narrated through the four main characters view points. It was a bit confusing at first because there are no separate chapter in each character’s narration. In one paragraph you get Jade’s inner thoughts and in the next one it’s Emma’s narrative and it throws you a bit. Alastair and Emma are a new couple, they met through Tinder and are just getting to know each other. Tomas and Jade are the new neighbours that move next door to Emma. To say that Jade has troublesome issues is an understatement.

The plot is intriguing and although at first I thought I had it all figured out the twist in the last half of the book will blow you away. I would have given this book a perfect five stars but the narrative flow of each character was a muddle and a hard slog. All I can say is that if you want to find out if someone gets away with murder then take a chance and read this one. 3.5 stars from me.
