REVIEW ALERT~ A SECRET FOR A SECRET by Helena Hunting

The All In series by New York Times bestselling author Helena Hunting is one I can’t recommend highly enough, and now A SECRET FOR A SECRET, the third stand-alone romance about trading secrets, breaking the rules and playing for keeps is live!

My name is Ryan Kingston, and I’m a rule follower. I’ve never been in a fistfight. I always obey the speed limit. I don’t get drunk, and I definitely don’t pick up random women at bars.

Except the night I found out that my whole existence has been a lie.

I got drunk. And picked up a stranger.

Her name was Queenie, and she was everything I’m not: reckless, impulsive, and chaotic. We did shots and traded secrets. And ended up naked at my place.

She left me a thank-you note in the morning and her panties as a parting gift. But no way to contact her.

Six weeks later I’m sitting in the first official team meeting of the season, and there she is. I neglected to mention that I’m the goalie for Seattle’s NHL team.

And Queenie? Turns out she’s the general manager’s daughter.

5-Stars ~ Reviewed by Sharon Thérèse

This book came at a time when I really needed cheering up, and Hunting’s narrative did just that. Warning: drinking hot tea while reading is risky. I spat mine all over my PJ bottoms from laughing so hard! But seriously, A Secret for a Secret isn’t all laughs and giggles, it’s a standalone opposites attract hockey romance with just the right amount of angst, swoon-worthy moments and loveable characters. And of course, as it’s book 3 in the All In Series, I got to meet up with my favourite players and their ladies again.

I confess that Bishop Winslow stole my heart in A Favor for a Favor, but now he’s running a close second with Ryan Kingston, better-known as King to his mates. This guy is perfect! Not only does he have a calming influence on the entire Seattle NHL team, but he’s also a damn good goalie. Ryan likes to live an orderly life and goes out of his way not to the break rules. I chuckled to myself when he got behind the wheel and ooh my, he surprised the pants off me in the intimate scenes. Naughty man!

“Dude, Jake is going to shit his fucking pants if he finds out about this.”
“He already knows.”

But I loved his selflessness, the rapport he has with Bishop and even when a family member rocks the boat, he’s still forgiving. An unforgettable scenario that creased me up was his drink of choice. It isn’t exactly what caused the unexpected and although he liked the flavour, it had its consequences! You’ll see why I saluted Ryan for his reaction to a bombshell dropped, too.

“…I want all your dark secrets to be mine to keep. I want all your pieces, all the things that make you who you are…”

I adored the pivotal part of Ryan and Queenie’s story at the beginning of the book…a little embarrassing for them both, their astonishment was tenfold when they met up again. Queenie’s between a rock and a hard place. Poor past decisions and an uncertain future have made this young woman a little bit anxious. Who better than King to give her encouragement, especially seeing she’s everything he isn’t. To her negative, he’s positive. She’s disorganized, he’s quite the reverse. However, she does have a mean sense of humor and watching her come into her own was a pleasure to read. I do so appreciate solid character development, Hunting hitting the nail on the head with everyone’s personality traits, their shortcomings and attributes.

“And I’m still sorry about . . . how overzealous I was.”
“I happened to enjoy your overzealousness.”

Am I asking too much for Jake’s book because he really deserves one? I wonder if it was only me who felt something in the air. Queenie’s father is a real charmer and the woman who catches his eye plays such an important role in Ryan’s life, that this would be the bomb.

“You have blinders on when it comes to me, Dad, and I love you for it.”

Lavender, River, all the kids–there are a lot of them in this story, are adorable. Their lives and that of their parents is like a lush voyage. With an imagination like the author’s, I’d dance on the spot if there were a second generation series.

“Queenie is a partner. She’s the olive to your pineapple.”
“That sounds awful.”

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Hunting’s captured all the feels, giving her readers a couple of excellent plot twists which I hadn’t bargained for, but were certainly welcomed and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend not just this novel, but the whole All In Series. Bravo!

Check out Rachel’s fabulous 4-star review!

I have to admit it was the cover that caught my eye when I first saw this new book from one of my favourite authors. I am a total sucker for a beautiful cover and like all covers, this did the trick and prompted me to read the blurb. This book like all Jodi’s books is set in England and if it’s one I love this author for is being unapologetically British! It’s music to my ears to read a book which has not been edited for other reader markets.

“Becker Hunter, you infuriate me.”
“Calm your britches. Don’t worry. I haven’t bitten her. Yet…..”

At the heart of this author’s romance novels there is always one hell of an Alpha male and Jodi certainly delivered with Becker Hunt. He’s everything you’d want him to be; arrogant, mercurial, charismatic, and of course, sinfully sexy! I have to admit it was hard not to like Becker even though at times he needed a swift kick up the backside. He’s a guy who professionally is at the top of his game running the family antique business but is in need of a new recruit to assist him. In terms of his personal life, he’s not in the business of being a one-woman guy as he’s not a believer of love so his world is turned upside down when he employs Eleanor Cole.

“I’m going to violate you in the most delicious ways imaginable, princess.”

Eleanor is new to London after leaving her small home town in search of a fresh start after the death of her Dad and the betrayal of her boyfriend. She’s seeking excitement and when the offer of her dream job at the prestigious Hunt Corporation lands at her feet she’s thrilled to take on this new challenge only doesn’t bank on Mr. Hunt being part of the deal! There’s obviously an undeniable connection between them which, to be honest, at times could’ve set my book on fire! The banter which ensues throughout the book is never-ending, so entertaining; I loved it! I highlighted so many parts of this book but could only share the cleanest parts in my review due to Jodi’s love of British swear words!

“You are the cockiest man I’ve ever met.”
“And you have the most beautiful red hair I’ve ever seen. We’re obviously a match made in heaven.”
“Behave.”

I can’t not mention the supporting characters in this read! Becker’s housekeeper, Miss Potts was a hoot and his grandfather was a darling. The interaction between all the characters was really sweet and at times so endearing. They both have the measure of Becker and do their utmost to warn Eleanor off. She’s not one to keep quiet though and its clear Becker has met his match when it comes to his new fiery assistant. The passion between these two is off the charts. It’s obvious they are both trying their best to do the right thing and keep their relationship purely professional but also know the chemistry is something they both can’t and will not ignore but at what price? Eleanor knows she has way more to lose than Becker but these feelings she has for such a complex man she cannot ignore.

“What’s happening here, princess?”
“I don’t know.”
“Me either. You piss me off on an hourly basis.”
“Like wise.”

It wasn’t until a good third of the way through the book I realised it was a duet which explained why the story wasn’t moving along as quickly as I’d hoped. The writing is faultless and Jodi can certainly craft a story. I would say the first part of the story was character-based but towards the end of the book, it became more plot lead. An underlying feeling of suspense and intrigue which I led me to read on at a much faster pace so much so I had to re-read a few chapters! I had my ideas about what was to come so to say I was stunned by how the book ended was an understatement. Without giving away spoilers all I will say is; roll on November!

When I joined Seattle’s NHL expansion team, I thought it was the start of something great. But nothing ever goes the way you expect. Take my introduction to my new neighbor. She came rolling in on the hot mess express at midnight, making a racket while she tried to get into my team captain’s apartment. Did I mention that he’s married to a woman who definitely was not her?

Imagine my surprise when I end up with an injury that has me out of the game for weeks, and she’s the one to offer to help me. I should probably add that she’s not the captain’s mistress. She’s his sexy, pastel-haired younger sister.

So we come up with an arrangement: she rehabs me so that I can get back on the ice sooner, and she can add a professional athlete that isn’t her brother to her client list. Seems simple enough. As long as I can keep my hands to myself and my hormones in check.

“Say you were taking a woman to a formal work function. Would you get her flowers or something?” I’ve gone on my fair share of dates, had a few relationships, but I’ve never been one for hearts and flowers or any of that bull. I’m thinking I might need to do that with Stevie, though, since she’s been screwed over pretty hard.“Is this a date or a favor for a friend?”

“I guess she thinks I’m doing her a favor.” At least that was the impression that I got when I offered to go with her.

“Is that actually what you’re doing?”

“Yes and no.”

“Can you give me a little more to go on?”

“Her ex is going to be there and I don’t want her to go alone.”

“You don’t want her to go alone because you’re worried he’ll be a jerk or he’ll try to take advantage of her?”

“Sure, yeah, that’s part of the reason.”

“Instead of me dragging the information out of you, why don’t you lay it down for me?”

“So, Stevie—”

“Hold up, we’re back to Rook’s little sister?”

“Who else would I be talking about?”

“I thought you said there isn’t anything going on between you, and now you’re taking her to some kind of work function? That’s not a favor; that’s a date. Does Rook know?”

“It’s none of his damn business.”

“I’m not sure he’ll see it that way.”

“Well, he doesn’t have control over her or what she does, or what I do.” I’m agitated now. “She’s not going to that thing alone. I don’t trust that ex of hers, and I don’t want her to end up in a situation she doesn’t like.”

Kingston tips his head to the side. “Dang.”

“What?”

“You like her.”

“Well, yeah, I like her.” What’s not to like? She’s gorgeous, and she’s funny and feisty; her body is rockin’; and she’s fun to be around, super chill, and genuinely selfless.

“Like you actually want to date her, though.”

I shrug, because what am I going to say? The answer to that is yes, I want to date her, but the timing needs to be right. “I don’t want the ex thinking he has another chance.“

“You really love complicated situations, don’t you?”

“They just tend to find me, is all.”

“When’s this event you’re supposed to take her to?” King asks.

“Saturday.”

He frowns. “We get back at noon on Saturday.”

“It’s in the evening.”

“You better hope our flight isn’t delayed.”

I hadn’t considered a delay. The only reason that would happen is if the weather isn’t good. “It doesn’t start until five. I should have plenty of time to get home and throw a suit on.”

Kingston nods and taps restlessly on the edge of the pool. “So would you call this your first date?”

“We hang out all the time.”

“‘Hang out’ meaning what?”

“Other than PT sessions, we watch hockey, eat pizza, stuff like that.”

Kingston blinks several times in rapid succession. “That’s it?”

“I pick her up from work a lot.”

“Have you ever bought her flowers before? Brought her any gifts?”

“I brought her over an aloe plant once. But, like I said, it hasn’t been like that.” I don’t get why he’s so hung up on the flowers.

“Again, please try not to take offense, but are you sure you haven’t inadvertently put yourself in the friend zone?”

“How do I know if I’m in the friend zone?” I haven’t had a lot of friends who are girls. Actually, I don’t think I’ve ever had a friend who’s a girl who isn’t related to me. And I only have two female cousins, whom I see a couple of times a year at family functions. They’re significantly younger than me, so mostly I avoid them.

It’s Kingston’s turn to blow out a long breath. “If you put your arm around her and she gets all snuggly but doesn’t try to take it any further, it could mean you’re in the friend zone.”

I don’t know what my expression must be, but the panic I feel inside quite possibly reaches my face. I feel like it should be obvious that I’m interested. A guy doesn’t spend endless hours with a gorgeous woman who combines weird pizza toppings for shits and giggles. But then again, I haven’t attempted to make a move on her since the almost-kiss. And any conversation I’ve tried to have with her about it has been shut down. In fact, she wants to pretend it didn’t happen. I hadn’t considered that this might be because she actually didn’t want it to happen at all. She seemed just as into it as I was. Or maybe I’ve been misreading the whole thing. “If I’m in the friend zone, how the hell do I get out?”

Diving into A Favor for a Favor, book two in the All In Series which can be enjoyed as a standalone is as always with Hunting’s books, easy-peasy. However, if you read A Lie for a Lie #1 first which just happens to be one of my fave 2019 reads, you’ll get to meet Stevie’s brother, RJ and learn about the NHL team’s camaraderie. Hunting has yet again delivered a laugh-out-loud romance that has me snorting into the middle of the night! So be warned, if you pick the book up late evening, you could possibly cause a disturbance!

“You’re welcome for making sure you weren’t murdered last night.”
“Buy a pair of pants!”

Ooh. My. Gawd! Stevie and Bishop’s impression of each other was not good from the word go. Not surprising either. She’d irritated this bear of a man at daft o’clock and he wasn’t in any mood to cover up. Yep, he loves his sassy underwear! To top the lot, he jumps to conclusions without having the facts and being the cocky guy that he is, rubs her up the wrong way…no pun intended, of course!

‘I don’t know that I hate him, but I definitely don’t like him.’

How could I not fall for Stevie? She’s no pushover and Bishop and I kinda liked this, but their slow-burn friendship isn’t going to be plain sailing. No love lost between Bishop and RJ won’t help matters and as far as physical therapists go in this sport, it’s still a man’s world, so Stevie’s got to prove herself. She’s very, but very good at her job and her first patient is…guess who? I really liked observing how little by little, they began to feel more at home with each other. She’s Bishop’s hope, the woman who will help him get back on the ice. Hmm, now to see if they rock their professional boats or not because all said and done, work ethics have to be complied with.

“You’re being awfully cagey about her if she’s just a friend. Don’t think I can’t tell you’re trying to hide her.”

Bishop is all kinds of grumpy and it took me a while to understand how he ticked. One thing is for sure, he’ll bend over backwards for his younger brother who he feels is his responsibility. Hunting delves into an illness hard to live with, her references accurate and enlightening. But who fell out of favour with me this time around which is weird seeing as I really connected with him in A Lie For A Lie was RJ. He has so much attitude in this book that I could have gladly strangled him!

“You can’t date a hockey player.”
“Are you kidding me?”

Great side players and although Stevie wound me up a tad with a past issue, I got eventually got her drift when it all came back to bite her. I liked the pacing of this light-hearted book with a touch of angst—you’ll see what’s bothering these two loveable characters by reading it, and the banter on all levels is fabulous! The narration from a dual perspective in present worked perfectly in this thoroughly enjoyable enemies-to-friends-to-lovers rom-com with all its amorous obstacles cleverly portrayed. Bravo Hunting!

I finished Even If It Hurts over a week ago, but what I never expected is for a story and its characters to have such an impact on my everyday thoughts. I still don’t know why I’m so profoundly affected by it since I’ve read this subgenre more times than I can count. The only conclusion I can reach is that the author’s not only successfully hit home, but also made me examine my capability to judge. Although I wasn’t jumping for joy with some elements of the story, it’s a read to be seriously considered. And as boundaries will be crossed, I’d highly recommend reading the synopsis if you haven’t already.

Mann’s storytelling is indisputably good. She made it difficult for me to control my emotions, and to say she cracked it with loves so unconditional would be putting it mildly. Set over a period of years and split into four parts, before anything else one gets the rush of first love and all the feels that go with it. My own memories came flooding back. The elations, passion and then the hurt of betrayal. Of course, betrayal comes in many forms and is therefore interpreted differently.

“… Even if it hurts. Even if it’s the hardest thing you’ll ever have to do, you have to stop.”

Oliver wowed the pants off me! Gorgeous, bearded and smooth-talking, Marni got the Brit lingo and collocations down to a tee. His loveable best mates, their banter and where they went together aroused many feelings of familiarity. But more importantly, the way he put the love of his life before himself.

“People disappear when there’s magic involved.”
“But I’m not going anywhere.”

The story flows effortlessly into the heroine’s new rose-coloured life. Although I was still in my comfort zone, it all felt too good to be true. For me, Chloe and Lance were a match made in heaven. Their pitch-perfect dialogue moved me, how he encouraged her career aspirations without much ado and how he supported her regardless of work obligations. However, was what occurred later fate or destiny? As fate can’t be chosen, I thought that at the very least, Chloe could have set a limit on love. Especially well-knowing someone wouldn’t come out unscathed. And as it’s not my place to say what her destiny will be, you’ll just have to read her story to find out.

“Sometimes, you have to leave for a while to remember why you fell in love in the first place.”

I was a nervous wreck three-quarters of the way into the book. No matter how hard I tried to put myself in Chloe’s shoes, I had trouble coping with some pretty spontaneous decisions made in some even more intense scenes. Sometimes we let our heart rule our head yet the reality of her doings because they did feel so lifelike, shattered me.

“One day, I hope the hurt will finally go away.”

Even If It Hurts is impeccably written. The author broke my heart to mend it and then break it again. I can’t possibly tell you whose team I was on as I adored both Oliver and Lance equally. Despite bawling my eyes out in the last chapter, a niggly feeling wouldn’t leave me alone—the hidden truth. Chloe does get advice from her bestie whom I really connected with but if it were me giving Chloe it, I still have no idea what I’d say to her. One thing’s for sure, not all is fair in love. Bravo Marni!

“You know this is wrong; you don’t need me to tell you that. I’ve never judged you, and I’m certainly not going to start now.”

“What can I get you?” the bartender asked, his hands hovering, waiting to reach for one of the bottles.

I gripped the edge of the bar top, holding the cold leather, and said, “Prosecco, please.”

The speakeasy wasn’t too packed tonight, just a steady business crowd filling the main space and the small seating nooks that were like little dens built into the perimeter.

My eyes were falling over the row of wine, studying the labels, when I felt a piece of fabric brush across the side of my arm. I turned just in time to see a dark suit jacket leaving my skin, and with it came a scent. One that was so sharp and demanding—the smell of power if it came in a bottle.

I couldn’t believe how much I liked it.

My gaze traveled higher to the silk tie, the broad shoulders, and the full frame that was at least six-three and all suit. And I found myself holding in my breath as I took in this absolutely gorgeous man with thick black hair and a clean-shaven face, blue eyes so dark that they looked navy.

“Have you ordered?” he asked in a rich, deep voice.

“He’s making mine now.”

It was easy to see there was nothing raw about this man. He had a polished, educated demeanor with a richness that went well beyond the cost of his suit.

He smiled, and I found myself sucked into it, unable to look away. “What’s your name?”

With a stare as invasive as his, one I felt move straight through me, it seemed my name was something he should certainly know at this point.

“Chloe Kennedy.”

He turned his body so he was now facing me, showing me details I hadn’t picked up before—a narrow, angular nose and tiny wrinkles at the sides of his eyes. His hand reached forward, and when it surrounded mine, he said, “Lance Hamilton.”

“Here’s your Prosecco,” the bartender said, and from the corner of my eye, I saw him set down the glass.

“Add that to my tab, and I’ll take a scotch,” Lance said with his eyes on me.

I knew my cheeks were blushing, and it wasn’t because he was paying for the drink. “You don’t have to do that.”

“I can’t let a beautiful woman like yourself pay for her own drink.” His eyes narrowed. “Unless there’s someone else here who should be buying it?”

“No.” I shook my head. “Only you.”

My hand was still in his, gripped in a shake that I felt all the way up to my shoulder, across my chest, and down to my other hand that was clenching the cold glass of champagne.

My comment seemed to make his smile grow, and he held my hand for a second longer before releasing me.

“I was just coming to find you,” Molly said, startling me, her arm then snaking around my waist. “Looks like Lance found you instead.”

I glanced at my best friend, knowing Lance could hear us. “You know him?”

“I work with Marshall,” Lance said before Molly could reply, and he leaned down and kissed her on the cheek. “Nice to see you, Molly.”

She grinned at him. “You too.”

He hadn’t been part of the group Molly and Marshall introduced me to when we first arrived, nor had I seen him at any of the parties I attended with her. If I’d met Lance before, I wouldn’t have forgotten.

“I’ll see you back at the table,” she said, her arm leaving my waist, and she gave me a look I knew well. It was one that told me she approved, and then she was gone just as the bartender handed Lance his drink.

“Thank you again,” I said as he handed the bartender his credit card. He held his glass in the air, near mine, smiling.

“To the morning and everything that happens in between.”

I laughed, clicking my Prosecco to his scotch, and it felt like a warmth had crept over me, even before I put my lips to glass and swallowed.

FRENEMIES by Emma Hart is LIVE!

Today we are thrilled to be sharing New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Emma Hart’s all-new enemies-to-lovers romcom, FRENEMIES

There are some things you just have to deal with.
Like your hot as hell college booty call moving in next door with his adorable daughter.

The only time we’ve ever gotten along is under the sheets. Old habits die hard because two minutes on my front porch is how long it takes us to bicker.
Not that a little fact like that bothers my healthy, eighty-year-old grandmother and roommate who’s determined to see me married before she bites the dust.

Unfortunately for me, she’s got her eye set on Cameron Black.

She’s barking up the wrong tree. He’s not The One, no matter how much I swoon when I see him with his daughter. I have no intentions of rekindling anything with him—until a rubber spider in my mailbox starts off the mother of all neighborhood prank wars, just like the ones we had in college, and throws me right into his path.

One that leads right to his bedroom…

Another gem from one of my favourite authors of this genre, a hilarious start to this year! Read on and you won’t be disappointed, be prepared to snort, giggle and laugh.

When Imogen finds out that the ex who ghosted her in college moves in next door, not only do sparks fly, but also water balloons and flour bombs. Add to that a very nosey and interfering grandma with no filter and you have the perfect set up for some very funny scenarios. Happy managing the family business albeit a love life found lacking, Immy’s life isn’t exactly boring because living with grandma Jenn gives her heart a jumpstart every day.

Our hottie hero Mason Black is a lawyer and single dad to a precocious four-year-old girl. All is well with his ex partner and is actually on friendly terms with her and her fiancé. He is in for a shock though when he finds out his new neighbour is his former bonking buddy Immy. There was no closure between them so he owes her an explanation.

What I love about Mason and Imogen’s story is that there is no third party drama and no angsty heartache. However, with their history they both needed closure because they need to move on…or do they? Their characters can be silly sometimes with all the pranks which I felt a bit childish for a couple in their late twenties but it sure provided the giggles in the book.

This is a fast-paced standalone romance told in dual points of view. The secondary characters, especially Grandma Jen is the root cause of all riotous scenes with her BDSM book club buddies. I hope I will have their chutzpah when I reach that age because they sound like a lot of fun and mischief. Maya, Mason’s little girl, is the icing on the cupcake and she provides the cuteness factor to their story. This book is full of witty dialogue, sharp and sexy banter and a lot of quotable quotes from Grandma Jen and her posse of old biddies.

If you’re saddened by all the bad news going on in the world, this romantic comedy is the perfect escape from reality. Pure hilarity, sweet romance and steamy sex scenes are all offered in this novel. What more can you ask for? I highly recommend this book!

OLIVER

When I met her, I couldn’t take my eyes off her.

We were so young and so passionate.

We studied business in the day and each other’s bodies at night.

We always knew it would end with the semester, so we loved hard with no regrets.

LANCE

When I met her, I couldn’t get her off my mind.

We were fresh out of college and ready to take on the world.

We fit each other like missing puzzle pieces.

And just when I thought my life was perfect, it got better. She became my wife.

CHLOE

I met my first love while studying abroad in London.

When I moved home, I didn’t think I’d ever fall in love again.

Until I met him. The man who became my husband.

The one I promised a lifetime to.

Then, my first love came back into my life …

And I realized that love was bigger than any one man.
